Wildcats kick Mules, 80-58, behind 25 from Peete

Jan 03, 2005 | Men's Basketball

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) - Fred Peete scored a career-high 25 points and Jeremiah Massey added 20 as Kansas State beat Central Missouri State 80-58 on Monday night.

Massey left the game with an injury with about seven minutes left in the game, with Kansas State leading 64-51.

Massey was hurt when he fell hard after missing a short jumpshot. He grabbed his right ankle and was helped to the bench, where medical staff helped him. It was not clear if Massey, Kansas State's leading scorer and rebounder, would be able to play when the Wildcats open their Big 12 season at Nebraska on Saturday.

Kansas State outscored the Mules (9-2) 16-7 after Massey's injury.

Peete scored 14 points in the second half, including a pair of free throws that lifted the Wildcats to 76-53 cushion with 2:53 left.

Kansas State led 34-31 at halftime on just 39.4 percent (13-of-33) shooting from the floor, with Peete and Massey combining for 22 points on 9-of-18 shooting.

Central Missouri State, meanwhile, made 43.3 percent (13-of-30) of its shots in the first half as it outscored Kansas State 14-10 in the paint.

But the Wildcats, who shot 50 percent (31-of-62) from the floor and outrebounded the Mules 36-24, were able to maintain a double-digit lead in the last 13 minutes of the game.

Central Missouri State shot just 35.5 percent (22-of-62) from the floor, including just 28.1 percent (9-of-32) in the final 20 minutes.

Cartier Martin finished with 13 points for the Wildcats, and Justin Williams added 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Sean Key led Central Missouri State with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

The Wildcats (10-1) are off to their best start in 11 years, and the Mules are off to their best start since 1995. Kansas State head coach Jim Wooldridge coached the Mules from 1985-91.
