MANHATTAN, Kan. Fall racing continues as the Kansas State women’s rowing team travels to the Head of the Iowa regatta on Sunday, Oct. 30 in Iowa City, Iowa.
The Wildcats have four entries in this weekend’s race including two boats in the Women’s Novice 8+ and two boats in the Women’s Open 8+ events. K-State will go head-to-head with collegiate crews from Creighton, Drake, Kansas, Wisconsin, Minnesota and host Iowa.
Once again, the varsity field will be strong with the likes of Wisconsin (11), Minnesota (17) and Iowa (20). All three Big Ten Conference crews finished ranked in the final USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association NCAA Division I Varsity Eight Coaches Poll a year ago.
"We are trying some slightly different lineups than in Oklahoma four weeks ago,” Head coach Patrick Sweeney said. “It's always interesting to see different combinations at this time. We will also get to see another Novice 8 who will be racing for the first time. These fall races offer the coaching staff a great opportunity to find those athletes that love to race and race hard.”
The 2.5 mile downstream race on the Iowa River starts in City Park and finishes near the Iowa Memorial Union on the University of Iowa campus. The races will be in a head race format. Teams will start the race one after another, with a 15-second break between each entry. The team that completes the course in the best time wins.
Last season, the Wildcats claimed three top 10 finishes at the event, taking fourth-place in the Women’s Open 8+ race behind Minnesota and Iowa.
