MANHATTAN, Kan. - The Kansas State women’s golf team will compete in its final tournament of the fall season as the Wildcats travel to Kiawah Island, S.C., for the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Collegiate at Oak Point Golf Course. The tournament tees off on Monday, Oct. 31st, with the first 27 holes. The final 27 holes will be played on Tuesday, Nov. 1st.
THE FIELD: Kansas State will face its largest field yet as it competes against 19 other schools. Maryland (44) and Nebraska (46) come in as the highest ranked teams according to the Golfweek/Sagarin performance index. Idaho (64), Kansas State (65), East Carolina (67), Campbell (70) and Louisville (71) round out the teams in the top-75. The remaining teams in the field are College of Charleston, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, San Francisco, East Tennessee State, Memphis, Western Carolina, Coastal Carolina, Oral Roberts, Appalachian State, Citadel and Charleston Southern. In a field dominated by east region competitors, the Wildcats have only faced five of the Watts/Palmetto competitors this fall, compiling a record of 5-4 (.556).
PLAYING HOST Oak Point Golf Course: The Edwin Watts/Palmetto Challenge, hosted by College of Charleston, will be played at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort on the Oak Point Golf Course. The par-72 course is the newest of the five course located at the resort. The Ocean Course located at Kiawah Island will be host to a couple of prestigious golf events: the 2007 Senior PGA Championship and the 2012 PGA Championship. The College of Charleston will be hosting it third tournament of the fall season.
LAST TIME OUT: After a home tournament, the Wildcats traveled to Arkansas for the Tyson/Embassy Suites Invitational, placing ninth of 16 taems. Leading the Wildcats was sophomore Kali Quick, who shot her best rounds of the season after carding 75-76-76227. Quick tied for 16th. Coming off her first career victory, junior Helene Robert tied for 20th, shooting 81-76-72229. The 20th-place standing marks the third straight top-20 finish for Robert. Sophomore Michelle Regan tied for 41st, shooting rounds of 76-83-75234. Sophomore Hailey Mireles carded scores of 77-84-75236 to place 46th. Junior Katy Heffel tied for 59th after scores of 78-80-82240.
EDWIN WATTS/PALMETTO HISTORY: The Wildcats are no stranger to making the Edwin Watts/Palmetto their final tournament of the fall. For the past four years it has been their concluding fall tourney, and a tournement in which the field has continuously grown. Beginning in fall 2001, Kansas State placed seventh among the field of 16. After carding rounds of 297-291-286874 in fall 2002, the team finished second in the field of 17. The third-round score of 286 and the 54-hole score of 874 remain in the Wildcat record book as the best 18- and 54-hole score for a Kansas State women’s golf team. Christine Boucher also won the individual title in 2002, and holds the 18- and 54-hole record as well, with scores of 64 and 204. In an even larger field in 2003 of 18, the team placed third with rounds of 309-302-298909. Last fall the Wildcats finished 10th out of 18 with scores of 305-297-309911.
