IOWA CITY, Iowa The Kansas State women’s rowing team claimed its second-straight Novice Eight title of the fall season at the Head of the Iowa Sunday.
The Wildcats’ top Novice boat comprised of coxswain Anna Wagner, Amber Mulyck, Heather Hoffman, Kari Chadd, Jennifer Flannigan, Kate Priest, Whitney Revell, Heather Gerstner and Michelle Higgins, turned in a winning-time of 14 minutes, 56.15 seconds defeating crews from Big Ten Conference powerhouses Minnesota and Wisconsin as well as regional rivals Drake and Creighton.
Kansas State’s second entry in the Women’s Novice 8+ event finished 16th with a time of 17:29.03. The Wildcats previously won the Novice 8+ race at the Head of the Oklahoma Centennial Regatta on Oct. 1.
In the Women’s Open 8+ race, K-State placed ninth (14:48.30) and 13th (15:19.21) respectively. Competing in head race format, each team started the race one after another, with 15-minute intervals between each entry. The team that completed the course in the best time took home a first-place medal.
“Both teams rowed exceptionally well today even against the bigger schools (Minnesota, Wisconsin and host Iowa),” Head coach Patrick Sweeney said. “They (Novices) are having fun in fall racing and their victory continues to show what we are building up for the future. The Varsity, however, rowed much better than their performance and time would indicate. Overall, we were really pleased with how they rowed and what they accomplished this weekend.”
The Wildcats close out their fall slate hosting the annual Sunflower Showdown against in-state rival Kansas scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 12 at Tuttle Creek Lake Reservoir in Manhattan.
