Wildcats Drop Final Game in Arizona, 7-3
Feb 13, 2005 | Baseball
SURPRISE, Ariz. - After sitting idle for two days due to rainouts and moving the final game’s location across Phoenix to the Kansas City Royals’ spring training facility, Kansas State baseball played its final game in Arizona, falling 7-3 to Portland.
The Wildcats (0-2) took their first lead of the season, as senior Terry Blunt smacked a triple and was later plated for the 1-0 lead. It was short-lived as the Pilots (1-1) tallied three in the second and two in the third off K-State junior starter Brett Mugge. Mugge was chased after four innings of work, striking our four, walking one and allowing seven hits and six runs, all earned. The bullpen for the Wildcats allowed just one run on three hits in five innings of work.
K-State received its first home run of the season, when junior outfielder Joe Roundy took Portland starter Ari Ronick deep in the fifth to cut the Pilots’ lead to 5-2. Blunt, Roundy and sophomore Jared Goedert all connected for two hits apiece. The Wildcats did not receive the big hit when they needed it, stranding 10 base runners over the nine innings.
Head coach Brad Hill and his charges will be back in action Friday, Feb. 18, against Arkansas State in Arlington, Texas. Game time is set for 11:30 a.m.
