K-State Concludes Busy, Yet Productive, Weekend

WALNUT, Calif. - Kansas State track and field finished competition at the Mt. SAC Relays on Sunday, as senior Erik Sproll and junior Christian Smith improved on NCAA Midwest Regional times. The Wildcats also added the women’s 4x400-meter relay squad to the list of regionally qualified athletes.
Smith finished third in the men’s 800-meter run invitational with a blistering time of 1:47.19. The clocking is the fastest collegiate clocking for Smith and ranks third on K-State’s all-time performance list. The Garfield, Kan., native also finished fifth on Friday in the 1,500-meter run in a regional qualifying time of 3:44.30.
Sproll crossed the tape in the men’s 800 university division in 1:48.98 for a third-place finish. The clocking for the Winnipeg, Manitoba, product improves on his regional qualifying time. Sproll set a career best at the 2003 Ward Haylett Invitational with a time of 1:48.97, which ranks ninth in K-State history.
K-State qualified its women’s 4x400-meter relay squad for the Midwest Regional in Norman, Okla. The team of Monique Coleman, Morgan Bonds, Shunte Thomas, and Lysaira Roman-Del Valle scooted the baton around the Mt. SAC track in 3:38.29 for a second-place finish. This brings K-State’s list of NCAA Midwest Regional qualified athletes to 24.
Also performing well on Sunday was junior T.J. Staab. The Plainville, Kan., native finished second in the shot put with a distance of 56-11.50. Staab also finished second at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational on Friday with a season-best toss of 59-05.00.
Kansas State will invade the 78th annual Kansas Relays next weekend in Lawrence.
