MANHATTAN, Kan. One more race remains for the Kansas State women’s rowing team as the Wildcats tune up for the Central Region Championships on May 14-15 in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
Hosted by the Oak Ridge Rowing Association and the University of Tennessee, the Central Region Championships serve as a qualifier for the upcoming 2005 NCAA Championships on May 27-29 in Sacramento, Calif.
Fifteen other schools round out the Central Region field with crews from Cincinnati, Creighton, Dayton, Drake, Eastern Michigan, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Murray State, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Wisconsin. All with test the 2,000-meter course at Melton Hill Lake with the top finisher receiving an automatic bid to nationals.
Four Central Region opponents are currently ranked among the top 20 in the USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association NCAA Division I Varsity Eight Coaches Poll including No. 3 Michigan State, No. 7 Michigan, No. 14 Wisconsin and No. 15 Minnesota. Indiana and Iowa are also receiving votes in the national poll.
The Central/South Region Championships is the only regatta of its kind in the NCAA. The Oak Ridge venue was chosen as the site of the inaugural competition in 1997 and has hosted ever since. Regional coaches selected the venue due to its geographically centralized location and its recognition as one of the nation's best courses.
This weekend’s event is a combined regatta with crews from the South Region competing alongside crews from the Central Region. Although all the crews race together, standings are determined within a school’s region.
Last season, the Wildcats placed 10th in the First Varsity Eight, 11th in the Second Varsity Eight and fifth in the First Novice Eight races. K-State has four shells entered in this weekend's regatta with heats beginning on Saturday morning with the 1N8 racing at 9:40 a.m., the 1V4 at 10:10 a.m., the 2V8 at 10:30 a.m. and the 1V8 at 11:40 a.m.
