Golf Digest gives Colbert Hills top-10 ranking

MANHATTAN, Kan. Golf Digest, one of the nation’s leading golf magazines, has ranked Kansas State’s Colbert Hills among the best college courses in the country in its September 2005 issue.

Designed by K-State alumnus and current Senior PGA star Jim Colbert and well-known Dallas golf course architect Jeffrey Brauer, Colbert Hills was one of three Big 12 courses to make the 15-school list, checking in at No. 10.

Oklahoma State’s Karsten Creek, site of the 2003 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship, was rated No. 1 overall, while The Rawls Course at Texas Tech, which hosted the 2005 NCAA Women’s Golf Central Regional, was tapped No. 4.

Golf Digest used a variety of criteria to evaluate each course, including “shot values, resistance to scoring, design variety, memorability, aesthetics, conditioning, ambience and bonus walking points”.

Affectionately referred to as “the really big course in Kansas” due to its 7,525-yard playing length from the back tees, Colbert Hills officially opened in May 2000. Three years later Colbert Hills served as the host of the 2003 NCAA Men’s Central Regional and in 2005 the course co-hosted the Kansas Amateur.
