LOXLEY Ala. – Led by sophomore Oliver Toyer, who is tied atop the individual leaderboard, the Kansas State men's golf team started their weekend off right as the Wildcats posted a strong first-round score before moving back to the middle of the pack in round two on Saturday at the Steelwood Collegiate hosted by the par-72, 7,096-yard Steelwood Country Club.
The Wildcats put together a first-round performance of 14-under par 274, tied for the 16th-best round in program history. However, a rocky second round of 1-over par 289, pushed them to a 36-hole total of 13-under par 563. K-State resides in seventh place, just one stroke behind Virginia. Auburn currently holds the lead after shooting a 35-under par 541 heading into Sunday.
"Overall we had a solid day," said head coach Grant Robbins. "Oliver was in total control of his game today with a ton of quality shots and several putts made. Erik Sabelstöm Holmberg had a fantastic round in the morning as well. We let a few shots get away in the afternoon, but overall the guys are all in a good place and capable of going low at any time. We just have to go out tomorrow and stay in the process, play with that next shot mentality and we will see where we stack up at the end."
Toyer is tied for first out of the 84-player field, putting together a 36-hole score of 12-under par 132. A 6-under par 66 performance in the first round was highlighted by seven birdies to help push the Englishman to the top early. Another 6-under 66 round in the second round solidified his spot in first. Toyer has recorded consecutive 10th-place finishes as he is looking for his first-career victory. He enters the final round tied with Georgia Tech's Albert Hansson.
Sabelström Holmberg also finished the first 18 holes of the invitational well, scoring a 6-under par 66 in the first round. However, he cooled off in round two, shooting a 4-over par 76. The junior finds himself tied for 31st place heading into the final round with a total score of 2-under par 142.
Sophomore transfer Octavio Laurent added to K-State's opening-round success, shooting a 2-under par 70 thanks to just one bogey through his first 10 holes. Similarly to Sabelström Homberg, Laurent cooled off in round two where he shot a 3-over par 75, leaving him in a tie for 47th place at 1-over 145.
Junior Fionn Dobbin and sophomore Ville Virkkala round out the lineup for K-State through 36 holes of competition. Both players shot well through the first round with Virkkala ending at even-par 72 and Dobbin just one stroke behind at a 1-over par 73. The finishes for the two flipped in the second round where Dobbin scored a 1-over par 73 and Virkkala carded a 3-over par 75. Dobbin is tied for 51st place at 2-over par 146, while Virkkala is just one stroke behind at 3-over par 147 and in a tie for 59th place.
Freshman Peyton Smith competed as an individual, scoring a 5-over par 77 in round one and a 4-over par 76 in round two. Smith ended his day-one performance in a tie for 76th place at 9-over par 153.
K-State will start its final round of the Steelwood Collegiate Sunday morning at 7:45 off of hole No. 10. Live results can be followed on SCOREBOARD Powered by Clippd.
