TULSA, Okla. – The Kansas State men's golf team wrapped up two rounds of play on Monday at The Clerico, as the Wildcats are tied for seventh place at the par-70, 7,004-yard Cedar Ridge Country Club.
K-State was able to complete its two rounds at 25-over par 585, but second-round play was suspended due to darkness for seven of the 13 teams in the field. Those teams will conclude the second round on Tuesday morning before the final round.
"The course played tough today," said head coach Grant Robbins. "The hole locations were all very difficult, and it seemed like we got on the wrong side of the hole quite a bit. It was nice to see a solid bounce back round from Oliver Toyer this afternoon. Overall, we just have to do a much better job of executing our shots and making sure we stay below the hole as much as possible. The field is pretty bunched up, so if we can stay patient and stay committed to our process, we have an opportunity to move up tomorrow."
A native of Cambridgeshire, England, Toyer leads the scoring lineup for K-State after shooting a 5-over par 145 through the first two rounds. A 1-under par 69 performance in the second round was highlighted by three-straight birdies on Nos. 14-16 as Toyer is tied for 18th place.
Sophomore Ville Virkkala finished the day in a tie for 25th place after shooting a 7-over par 147. The Espoo, Finland, product settled in late during both rounds, going even par in the final seven holes of round one and 1-under par in the final six holes of the second round.
Fellow sophomore Octavio Laurent started strong in round one by shooting 1-over par 71, but he cooled off in the second round by carding a 6-over par 76. Laurent ended Monday's play tied with Virkkala at 7-over par 147.
Juniors Erik Sabelström Holmberg and Fionn Dobbin are tied for 34th place through 36 holes at 9-over par 149.
Sophomore Jules De Brauwere and freshman Oscar Stendahl made the trip to Tulsa to compete as individuals. De Brauwere finished the first day in a tie for 10th place at 3-over par as he still has three holes to play in his second round. Stendahl is tied for 13th place at 4-over par with two second-round holes to complete.
The Wildcats will conclude play at The Clerico on Tuesday. Live results can be followed on SCOREBOARD Powered by Clippd.
