LOXLEY Ala. – The Kansas State men's golf team looks to finish its fall season strong at the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational, hosted by South Alabama, on Saturday and Sunday at the par-72, 7,096-yard Steelwood Country Club.
After a strong final round at The Clerico landed K-State in third place, the Cats look to keep that momentum heading into this weekend. The Wildcats will face their toughest field so far with three teams ranked in the top 15 and six more ranked in the top 50.
The Wildcats and host team South Alabama are two of the 15 squads competing in Loxley with the rest of the field including Auburn, Georgia Tech, Iowa State, Kennesaw State, Maryland, Memphis, Mississippi State, Nebraska, Rice, Rutgers, Texas A&M, Virginia and Virginia Tech.
"We are excited to play at Steelwood this weekend," said head coach Grant Robbins. "It will be a strong field and a great opportunity for us to go head to head with some of the best teams in the country. With that being said, we are really playing against the golf course. It's a course that is more of a placement course where accuracy off the tee and precision into the greens are crucial for scoring. We have some experience playing here, so we will have a good game plan going in. We just need to focus one shot at a time and execute to the best of our ability. If we can do that, we will have a good week."
Cambridgeshire, England product Oliver Toyer leads the scoring lineup and is looking to continue his phenomenal sophomore campaign. Toyer is coming off of a 10th-place finish where he ended his weekend with back-to-back 69s, putting him at 2-under par in his final two rounds. Toyer has yet to finish outside of the top 10 this fall after only one top-10 finish last year.
Sophomore Ville Virkkala claims the No. 2 spot in the lineup. Virkkala looks to bounce back at Steelwood after finishing 7-over par two weekends ago, landing him in a tie for 17th place. The Espoo, Finland, native has finished top-20 this season in every event he's competed in.
Octavio Laurent, out of Bordeaux, France, started hot last weekend but cooled off as the rounds progressed. The sophomore is looking to outperform his finish in the Cats' home event to start the season where he finished in eighth place. Laurent continues to show flashes of his potential and looks to put the pieces together in the fall finale.
Junior Fionn Dobbin finds himself at the No. 4 spot in the lineup after tying for 24th place in the last event. Five of Dobbin's last five rounds have counted towards K-Stats's final tally. Experience is on the side of the junior this weekend with this being his third time playing at the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational.
Junior Erik Sabelström Holmberg rounds out the lineup for K-State at Steelwood. The junior has already competed in more events in the Cats' scoring lineup this year (2) than last season (1). This will be Sabelström Holmberg's second appearance at this course as he previously finished just 3-over par during his freshman season.
Freshman Peyton Smith will also join the Cats at Steelwood and compete as an individual. Smith opened his freshman campaign with a rocky start at home but has since claimed two top-20 finishes, one of which was a third-place tie at the Washburn Invite two weekends ago.
The first two rounds of the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational will be played on Saturday with the first round teeing off in the morning and the second starting immediately after. The final round will be played Sunday morning where teams will start on either Nos. 1 or 10 at varying times depending on placement through the first 36 holes.
K-State will start round one with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning. Live results can be followed on SCOREBOARD Powered by Clippd.
