TULSA, Okla. – The Kansas State's men's golf team finished strong at The Clerico on Tuesday morning after producing the second-best round of the tournament and climbing four spots at the par-70 7,004-yard Cedar Ridge Country Club.
The Cats tied for third place with South Alabama, just one stroke behind No. 3 New Mexico for second place. An even-par 280 final round was enough to catapult K-State four spots to finish with a 54-hole score of 25-over par 864.
The Wildcats' final round, highlighted by two individuals finishing at even par and a 1-under par round, was only behind host team Oral Roberts, who had the best 18-hole score of the event at 2-under par 278 on Tuesday.
"I'm proud of how we competed today," said head coach Grant Robbins. "We really empathized the process before the round, and I thought we did a much better job of being committed on each shot and letting go of outcomes. There were a lot of shots we gave away yesterday, but I'm pleased with the way they came out this morning and just played golf without worrying about the score. It's a mindset we have to keep improving on. The guys have played a lot of golf the last three weeks, so it's going to be important to rest up this weekend and get ready to finish out the fall strong at Steelwood."
K-State was led by sophomore Oliver Toyer, who continued his strong season over the last 54 holes by tying for 10th place at 4-over par 214. Toyer ended his final round at 1-under par 69 thanks to an eagle on the par-5 hole 14.
Ville Virkkala also continued his successful sophomore year, finishing the tournament in a tie for 17th place. After scoring an even-par 70 in the final round, Virkkala totaled 7-over par 217 over the 54 holes.
Fionn Dobbin finished third for the Cats after also posting a final-round score of even-par 70. The junior ended the tournament with a score of 9-over par 219 to tie for 24th place.
Erik Sabelström Holmberg and Octavio Laurent rounded out the scoring lineup for K-State by tying for 28th place at 10-over par 220. Sabelström Holmberg concluded the final round at 1-over par 71, while Laurent went 3-over par 73.
Sophomore Jules De Brauwere and freshman Oscar Stendahl continued to shine in their individual performances as De Brauwere tied for 17th place and Stendahl tied for 21st place. Both carded a 4-over 74 on Tuesday as De Brauwere finished with a three-round total of 7-over par 217 and Laurent posted an 8-over par 218.
Host team Oral Roberts finished in first place at 14-over par 854, a 10-stroke win over the Lobos. The Golden Eagles also had the top individual in Ben Gratzl at 6-under par 204 thanks to a bogey-free final round of 6-under 64.
K-State men's golf will be back in action October 31-November 1, in Loxley, Alabama, to complete its fall slate with the Steelwood Intercollegiate, hosted by South Alabama, at Steelwood Country Club.
