
LINCOLN, Neb. Kansas State’s Laci Heller won her first hammer throw title of 2006 at the Husker Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Ed Weir Stadium.
Heller tossed to a distance of 199-08 to win the hammer title by over eight feet over runner-up Kate Burton of Wyoming (191-01). Heller, a sophomore from Meriden, Kan., has now surpassed 190 feet in her last two competitions and has surpassed the NCAA Midwest Regional qualifying standard of 177-07 in all four competitions this season.
Not to be outdone in the women’s hammer throw was sophomore Loren Groves and senior. Groves, the native of Scott City, Mo., finished third with personal season-best mark of 188-08 and improves on her NCAA Midwest Regional status. Groves’ previous season-best was 183-05 at last weekend’s Texas Relays.
Rogers finished fifth in the hammer with a distance of 177-03. She reached her personal season-best and the NCAA Midwest Regional qualifying distance of 177-11 at the Texas Relays.
In the men’s hammer throw, senior Coby Cost finished second with a personal and team season-best of 194-07. The native of El Dorado, Kan., had a previous season-best of 192-10 at the ESU Spring Twilight on March 16. Cost entered the weekend ranked 15th in the Midwest region in the hammer.

Tempe, Ariz. Competition will conclude late Saturday night at Sun Angel Stadium. Results and a full release will be available Sunday morning at k-statesports.com.
