TULSA, Okla. Five Kansas State women’s tennis student-athletes opened play at the Hurricane Invitational on Friday to kick-off the fall campaign.
K-State opened with doubles action against two ranked teams from Arkansas in the Red Draw. K-State’s Katerina Kudlackova and freshman Antea Huljev fell to the 25th-ranked pairing of Maryori Franco and Nanar Airapetian, 8-2. In the second match in the Red Draw, Viviana Yrureta and Natasha Vieira fell 8-3 to the 57th-ranked tandem of Ela Kaluder and Aurelija Miseviciute. K-State’s final newcomer, Pauline Guemas, was paired with Delia Damaschin of Arkansas in the Black Draw, but the pair fell to Julie Westfall and Jie Zeng of Tulsa, 8-4.
Kansas State was unable to turn its luck around in singles play, as the five singles matches all ended in a setback. In the Blue Draw, Kudlackova fell to the 25th-ranked Kaluder of Arkansas, 6-1, 6-0, while Yrureta was defeated by Iryna Tkachenko of Oklahoma State, 6-2, 6-4.
In the Gold Draw, Huljev was beaten in her first career singles match as a member of the Wildcats by Franco of Arkansas, 6-0, 6-4. In the White Draw, Vieira was set down by Marta Marcinkowska of Tulsa, 6-2, 6-2 and Guemas fell in her Wildcat singles debut to Zeng of Tulsa, 6-2, 6-0.
The Wildcats will continue action at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on Saturday.
