Cats Compete Well at Pre-NCAA

Terre Haute, Ind. Beverly Ramos places ninth in the 6K women’s blue race at the Pre-NCAA Championships Saturday morning helping the women’s team to a 21^st place overall finish. Kansas State’s men finish 40^th in the 8K white race led by senior Alex Umberger.

Washington, the No. 1 team in the nation, won the event with an overall score of 36 in the women’s blue race. Brianna Felnagle from North Carolina placed first overall with a 6K time of 20:02.4. In the men’s 8K white race the Stanford Cardinals captured first with 77 overall points. Samuel Chilanga of Liberty won the race with a time of 22:51.

The Pre-NCAA Championships brought 23 of the top 30 ranked women’s teams in the nation to the LaVern Gibson Cross Country Course. In the blue race 41 total teams competed including Oklahoma State, Kansas and Missouri from the Big 12.

Ramos finishes with another career best crossing the line with a 6K time of 20:20.6. With the time she records the fastest 6K time in Wildcat history topping former great Amy Mortimer. The ninth place finish gives her four consecutive top-ten finishes this season. Ramos finishes in front of all other Big 12 runners including Mihaela Susa of Oklahoma State. Ramos ran in the 3-10 pack for most of the race and passed the 5K mark at 16:52 posting a life time best at that distance.

“I think Beverly (Ramos) ran at an extremely high level,” said head coach Michael Smith. “If she runs that way for the rest of the year she will accomplish all her goals and help our team perform really well.”

Seniors Liliani Mendez and Emily Dittemore rounded out the top three respectively for the Wildcats gaining two places on in state rival Kansas who finishes 23^rd overall. Mendez and Dittemore have consistently finished two and three for the Cats this season with Mendez being the second runner for the women for the fourth consecutive race. Mendez, recovering from injuries throughout the summer, continues to be a top performer for the Wildcats and is looking to be in full form for the Big 12 Championships in two weeks. Dittemore, Megan-Anne Perrin and Boglarka Bozzay all ran life-time bests at the 6K distance.

“I am very happy at the way the women ran today,” said Smith. “They competed well. Honestly I think we can run better, and we will run better. We had almost every one of our women compete at the best of their ability today. Our focus is on the Big 12 now, and we look forward to competing well in the championship.”

For the men Umberger finishes 230^th overall and is the top-runner for the wildcats for the second consecutive race this season, running an 8K time of 26:14.1. Jack Sachse ran in just his second event of the season and finishes as the second runner for the Wildcats followed by senior Danny Schneider.

The Wildcats will continue action Saturday Nov. 1^st in Ames, Iowa for the Big 12 Championships.
