K-State to Host IHSA Hunt Seat Shows Saturday

"We are looking forward to the IHSA show this weekend,” said Ashley Foster, Hunter Seat head coach. “Many riders will get the opportunity to compete for us for the first time this year. We are hoping to pick up wins at both competitions this Saturday. In order to pull out a win, we will be counting on strong performances from Christine Fosnacht, Dresden Sommer, Hannah Schroller, Caroline Sweeney, Wendy Wert, Erin Paulsen, and Kim Buran. We will look to these riders to put us ahead in the point standings for the day."
Schroller will lead the Wildcats in IHSA competition this season. Last year, she placed third in intermediate fences and second on the flat at the
Sweeney qualified for nationals last year as well by placing third in Walk/Trot/Canter at the Washington IHSA show last season. This will be her first showing of the 2008 season, with Wendy Wert, Kim Buran, Hannah Schroller, and Christine Fosnacht showing for the first time as well.
Wert finished sixth overall in Advanced Walk/Trot/Canter at the IHSA Hunt Seat Regionals last season, and Paulsen took home the High Point Rider award at the IHSA Hunt Seat show at Fox Creek Farm on October 20, 2007.
Sommer also qualified for Hunt Seat Regionals last season, and took home a third place overall finish in intermediate fences. She took second place in intermediate fences and third in open equitation on the flat in
Competing against the Wildcats this weekend are Augustana College, Northern Illinois, Southern Illinois at Carbondale, Kansas, Northwestern, Washington, Truman State, Missouri State and Western Illinois.
Eight different levels of Hunter Seat riding comprise the IHSA format from beginner through USEF Medal/Maclay riders. Riders compete individually for a first through sixth placing, and their points are added up to declare a "High Point Team" or "Reserve High Point Team" which are awarded to the top two point-earning teams at each show.
On an individual basis, riders accumulate points from season to season in all divisions but the open division to determine postseason consideration. Acquiring 35 points in a respective division earns a rider a trip to regionals, where riders will then compete for the top two placings in their class to go on to zones. At zones, a rider must also place first or second to move on to nationals, which will be held this year at the Miller Coliseum in
