SAN ANTONIO Kansas State got a great outing from its starter Chase Bayuk and UTSA made six errors, but it wasn’t enough as the Wildcats dropped game one of a two-game series to the Roadrunners, 5-4, at Wolff Field. With the loss,
Bayuk went 5.1 strong innings, allowing three runs one of which was unearned but took a no decision. He gave up just four hits and struck out a career high 10 Roadrunners. His 10 K’s were the most since Ben Hornbeck had 10 against
With the game tied 4-4 in the top of the eighth inning,
The UTSA offense took the momentum it gained from the top of the inning as Zach Etheredge led the inning off with a double to left off K-State reliever Trevor Hurley (0-1). Following a sac bunt which moved him to third, Ryan Rummel flied out to centerfield which was deep enough for Etheredge to tag up and score the eventual winning run.
Kansas State scored the game’s first run in the fourth inning as Nate Tenbrink popped up to shallow leftfield, but the ball was dropped by leftfielder Jose Hernandez which allowed Tenbrink to move to second with just one out. Following a King flyout, Rob Vaughn came to the plate looking for his first hit of the season and delivered with an RBI single through the middle to give the Cats a 1-0 lead.
UTSA came right back and took the lead from K-State in the bottom half of the fourth as Michael Rockett reach first on an error. The very next pitch, Trent Lockwood blasted a ball over the rightfield run for a two-run home run.
The Roadrunners grabbed another run in the fifth as Aaron Powell led off with a single to centerfield and moved to second on a sac bunt. Following a strikeout, James Keithley recorded a two-out RBI single to center to extend the lead.
The Cats tied things up in the sixth as another Roadrunner error and walks proved costly. With leadoff man Tenbrink on first, Jason King hit a single into rightfield, which went under Powell’s glove and allowed Tenbrink to score from first and King to go all the way to third. King then scored on a groundout by Byron Wiley, his first RBI of the season, which tied the game three apiece.
K-State took the lead back in the seventh as Justin Bloxom led off with a single and then moved to third on a Tenbrink double, his fifth of the season. Bloxom scored on another Vaughn RBI single with one out, which moved Tenbrink to third. However, back-to-back strikeouts by Chovanec ended the Wildcats’ threat for a big inning.
As quickly as the Cats took the lead, UTSA tied things up in the bottom of the seventh as an error, a sac bunt and a double brought in Lance Brown.
The Wildcats wrap up their two-game series against UTSA on Wednesday beginning at 12 p.m. at Wolff Stadium.
