Ramos Finishes All-American Career at Championships

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Senior Beverly Ramos put the lid on her Kansas State cross country career on Monday at the NCAA Championships when she crossed the finish line in the women's 6K race with a 33rd-place finish, good enough to name her a 2009 USTFCCCA Cross Country All-American. She is the ninth All-American in school history.In a meet that brought together a field of 254 of the most talented Division I female runners, Ramos ran as an individual and bettered her 52nd-place finish at last season's championship with a 33rd-place time of 20:38.9. Illinois' Angela Bizzarri won the individual title as she was the first to cross the finish line at 19:46.8.
Going into the race, Ramos' plan was to run at her own pace early and make a push for the leaders in the second half. On the LaVern Gibson Cross Country course, she opened the race with a quality 3K; however, as the race leaders went out very fast, Ramos fell slightly behind. Through the latter half of the course, as fatigue began to set in with competitors around her, Ramos kept pushing and moved up several spots earning her top-40 finish in what she called her smartest race of the season.
"Beverly ran a little more conservative early in this race and moved up brilliantly," said head coach Michael Smith. "It was a great run for her and a fine way to close her cross country career at K-State. I'm proud of the way she ran. She worked for this all her career and she achieved all her objectives for this season."
Along with the All-American honor, Ramos finished a historical collegiate career full of recognition and accolades. Throughout her career, she finished in the top-10 a total of 13 times, including seven first-place finishes. She has been honored as Big 12 Runner of the Week four times, named to the All-Academic team three times, and All-Big 12 team and All-Regional team twice. Ramos also clocked the fastest 6K time in K-State history and became the first female runner to qualify for back-to-back NCAA Championship appearances since Amy Mortimer in 2002.
