Wildcats Sweep K-State Winter Invitational

MANHATTAN, Kan. – In the team’s first full meet of the indoor season, the Kansas State track and field team posted dominant marks, including 17 first-place finishes, in a winning effort at the K-State Winter Invitational in Ahearn Field House on Saturday.
K-State swept the meet, with the men defeating Oklahoma State (81-33) and UMKC (85-35), while the women topped Oklahoma State (73-61), UMKC (72-58) and Omaha (75-39).
“In general, I think the meet was pretty solid,” Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto said. “There was not a whole lot that was disappointing. All-in-all, I think we came out of it healthy so it was a pretty good meet for us.”
The Wildcats got off to a strong start in the field, winning seven of the 12 field events during the competition. Senior Janee' Kassanavoid opened the meet with a personal best in the women’s weight throw, posting a mark of 19.89m/65-03.25 to finish in first place. Fellow senior Brady Grunder also set a new personal best in the weight throw with a mark of 20.72m/67-11.75 to take first place.
Sophomore Brett Neelly recorded the throws groups third first-place finish of the day, using a huge personal best throw of 18.07m/59-03.50 to win the men’s shot put and hold steady in ninth place on the school’s all-time list. Fellow shot putter Jayce Brack also PRed, throwing 16.94m/55-07 to claim second place.
K-State’s jumps group also had an impressive day in the field. Senior Zanri Van der Merwe missed her indoor personal best by two centimeters after posting a mark of 5.73m/18-09.75 to win the women’s long jump, while sophomore Tom Pyle recorded a personal best in the long jump with a mark of 6.85m/22-05.75. Fellow Senior Miles Bearden recorded a first-place effort in men’s high jump, winning the event with a mark of 2.10m/6-10.75.
Pole vaulters Zack Supple and Megan Vanderpool also added wins for the jumps group during Saturday’s meet. Supple used a jump of 4.63m/15-02.25 to solidify his first-place finish, while Vanderpool posted a strong mark of 3.50m/11-05.75 to earn a victory in the event.
The team was equally as impressive on the track. Sprinters Terrell Smith and Wurrie Njadoe each recorded first-place finishes in the 60 meter dash, posting times of 6.78 and 7.54, respectively. Sophomore Nick Albus also added a personal-best time in the 60 meter dash to take third place.
The Wildcats also swept the 300 meter dash as sophomore Ranae McKenzie ran a personal-best 38.75 and sophomore Devie Freeman II posted a time of 34.90. Senior Kaneil Harrison, who finished in third in the event, posted a personal-best time of 35.05.
The distance group also dominated the meet. Senior Morgan Wedekind won the women’s mile run with a time of 4:59.21, while junior Lukas Koch ran his mile in 4:17.19 to take first place in the event. Fellow junior Sam Oxandale posted a PR in the mile, running 4:20.84 to finish in third place.
Senior Jeff Bachman posted a time of 8:34.96 in the 3,000 meter run to win the event, while Bryan Zackand Joe Gorthy each set new personal bests with times of 8:47.06 and 8:58.44, respectively. Junior Kayla Doll also won the 3,000 meter run with a time of 10:08.46, just ahead of sophomore Emma Wren, who posted a personal-best time of 10:08.62 to take second place.
Senior Kain Ellis added to the impressive performance by the distance group, recording a personal-best time of 2:27.76 in the 1,000 meter run to win the event, while sophomore Chris Sandquist recorded a new personal best of 2:29.05 to take fifth place.
The Wildcats also saw strong marks from their newcomers on Saturday. Angelo Gordon finished third in the long jump and second in the 300 meter dash with marks of 6.83m/22-05 and 34.97, respectively. Helene Ingvaldsen had a big mark in the weight throw with toss of 18.53m/60-09.50, just 13 centimeters short of cracking the school’s all-time list.
On the track, freshmen Erin Lee and Anna Keeley finished in second and third place in the women’s mile run with times of 4:59.96 and 5:31.79, respectively. Madeline Neufeld also had a strong race in the 600 yard run with a time of 1:29.15.
K-State returns to action on January 6, 2017, as the team heads down I-70 to compete in the Bill Easton Classic in Lawrence, Kansas. More information on the meet, including a full schedule for the meet, can be found here.
