DELOSS DODDS INVITATIONAL

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Strong performances in the throws and distance events, which included a meet record and seven first-place finishes, propelled the Kansas State track and field team to a sweep of the DeLoss Dodds Invitational on Saturday in Ahearn Field House.

The Wildcat men defeated Colorado State (96-51), Tulsa (102-45), Oklahoma State (102-34) and North Texas (105-35), while the women topped North Texas (77-43), Oklahoma State (77-58), Tulsa (75-60) and Colorado State (75-54).

“I really thought it was a great meet from a team perspective,” Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto said. “There were a lot of personal bests and season bests, as well as meet records and marks that will get kids in the NCAA Championship. There were just a lot of really fine results.”

Senior Janee' Kassanavoid won her fourth-straight meet in women’s weigh throw with a personal-best mark of 21.38m/70-01.75, a DeLoss Dodds Invitational record. The result is also good for second on the school’s all-time list, falling just three centimeters short of the school record of 21.41m/70-03 held by Lauren Groves and is the fourth-furthest mark in Division I this season. Freshman Helene Ingvaldsen also posted a dominant mark, throwing over 20 meters for the first time this season with a throw of 20.11m/61-11.75 to finish in second place.

All three of the Wildcats’ men recorded personal bests in the weight throw, led by senior Brady Grunder, whose mark of 21.20m/69-06.75 was just seven centimeters shy of the meet record and 42 centimeters shy of the school record. Junior Mitchell Dixon took second with a throw of 19.60m/64-03.75, good for seventh place on the school’s all-time list, while senior Kyle Smith finished third with a personal best throw of 19.16m/62-10.50.

In men’s shot put, sophomore Brett Neelly continued his dominance, recording a new personal best toss of 18.49m/60-08, moving him to seventh place on the school’s all-time list. Fellow sophomore Jayce Brack also recorded a new personal best with a throw of 17.44m/57-02.75.

The Wildcat jumpers also had a strong day in the jumps. Freshman Wurrie Njadoe, competing in her first meet since winning high-pointer scorer of the meet honors at the KSU-KU-KSU Triangular, recorded a new personal best in the long jump with leap of 6.00m/19-08.25. Her efforts moved her into ninth place on the school’s all-time list in the event.

K-State’s high jumpers dominated the meet, led by reigning NCAA outdoor champion, Kim Williamson, who matched her indoor personal best with a leap of 1.87m/6-01.50. Freshman Shanae McKenzie recorded a new personal best with a leap of 1.72m/5-07.75, which junior Rhizlane Siba also recorded to claim third. Junior Christoff Bryan and senior Miles Bearden took the top two spots in the men’s competition with marks of 2.17m/7-01.50 and 2.07m/6-09.50, respectively.

Senior Zack Supple and junior Megan Vanderpool each continued their season progression in the pole vault. Supple matched his season-best mark of 4.90m/16-00.75 to win the men’s competition, while Vanderpool missed her indoor personal best by two centimeters as she also recorded as season-best jump of 3.71m/12-02.

On the track, the Wildcats shined in the middle-distance events. Sophomore Kurt Loevenstein and freshman Noah Stevenson took first and second in the men’s 800 meter run with times of 1:53.85 and 1:54.49, respectively, while senior Marija Stambolic won her second 800 meter race of the season with a time of 2:14.33, a season-best time.

There was a similar string of results in the 1000 meter runs as junior Lukas Koch and senior Kain Ellis took the top two spots in the event with times of 2:25.49 and 2:27.31. Senior Morgan Wedekind was the only Wildcat in the women’s 1000 meter run, which she won with a time of 2:53.53.

All three of the Wildcats’ men’s mile runners recorded personal bests as junior Sam Oxandale took second place with a time of 4:17.80, junior Brett Bachman took third place with a time of 4:18.61 and senior Jeff Bachman crossed the finish line in 4:19.45 to claim fourth place. On the women’s side, sophomore Emma Wren won the event with a time of 5:06.33.

“One of the areas I was really pleased with that I think will help us moving forward is the guys and girls in the 800, 1000 and mile,” Rovelto noted about the distance group. “I think they all took a step forward. I thought everyone in that area ran strong and did a really nice job.”

Junior Terrell Smith stole the show in the sprints, winning both the 60 meter dash and 200 meter dash with time of 6.72 and 21.20, respectively. Freshman Angelo Gordon added an impressive time in the 60 meter dash with a personal best of 6.88, while sophomore Nick Albus took third in the 200 meter dash with a mark of 22.12. Sophomore Ranae McKenzie, running in her first 200 meter dash of the season, recorded a new personal best with a time of 24.58.

The hurdles were also a big talking point on day two of the meet as all four women 60 meter hurdlers set personal bests. Freshman Ariel Okorie finished second with a season best 8.48, while fellow freshman Nina Schultz posted a season best 8.49 to finish in third place and take sole possession of seventh place on the school’s all-time list. McKenzie and junior Claudette Allen finished in fourth place and fifth place after finishing with a time of 8.60.

K-State closed out the meet strong with two first-place finishes in the 4x400 meter relays. The men’s top team posted a final mark of 3:21.94, the second-fastest time this season, while the women’s top team finished with a time of 3:56.01.

“Conference wise, there were a lot of marks today that if they took them and duplicated them at the conference meet, we would have some really nice places,” Rovelto added about his team’s overall performance. “If we can stabilize at that level of performance we are going to be in pretty good shape.”

K-State returns to action on January 28 as the team travels to Albuquerque, New Mexico, for the New Mexico Invitational at the Albuquerque Convention Center. More information on the meet can found on the school’s website by clicking here.
