Oct 13, 2017 | Cross Country
PEORIA, Ill. – The Kansas State men's and women's cross country teams concluded their regular season schedule on Friday at the Bradley Pink Classic with a set of strong performances, as the men's team placed fifth overall with 151 points, and the women followed with a 13th place performance with 382 points.
The No. 14 Midwest ranked men's team took to Newman Golf Course first on Friday afternoon in a field of 27 teams. The senior tandem of Colton Donahue and Lukas Koch led the Wildcats with top-15 finishes, as Donahue finished 11th overall with a time of 24:58.7, and Koch in 14th with a time of 25:02.2. Koch's finish set a new personal best, finishing 21 seconds faster than his previous record that set last year in the same meet.
"The guys did a pretty good job," head coach Ryun Godfrey said of the men's performance. "To get fifth out of 27 [teams] is a good effort. I was pleased with how the team did and I expect them to do the same into conference as well."
In the men's race, Iowa's Nathan Mylenek won the race with a time of 24:26.2. Iowa claimed the men's team victory totaling 84 points, outpacing the host team Bradley, who scored 98 points.
The No. 9 Midwest ranked women looked to defend their ranking against a crowded field, including 10 teams ranked in their respective regionals. The Wildcats were led out by senior Kayla Doll, who had the top performance with time of 21:34.6 to finish in 21st place. Doll's performance puts her ninth all-time at the course in K-State history. Junior Emma Wren improved on her personal best time set on September 30 at the Cowboy Jamboree by setting another personal record with a time of 21:54.1. The Wildcats top-five was rounded out by Cara Melgares (61st, 22:15.2), Sydney Collins (75th, 22:25.3) and Erin Lee (184th, 24:07.8).
"Kayla [Doll] had a good race, and Emma [Wren] finished very well," Godfrey said. "It can be tough to place five runners without gaps in a field of 30 teams. We are going to take a few days to recover from this meet then get back after it and train hard for conference."
The South Dakota women's team came away with the victory in the women's red race, scoring a total of 105 points. The women's race was won by Loyola's Lindsey Brewis, who finished with a time of 20:36.3.
The Wildcats will take the next two weeks to prepare for the Big 12 Championships on October 28 in Round Rock, Texas. The meet will take place at Old Settlers Park, with the men racing first at 9:00 a.m. and the women following at 10:00 a.m. Check out the Big 12 Championship meet website here.
