Cats go undefeated in singles play on Sunday
WINSTON SALEM, N.C. – The K-State women's tennis team finished this weekend's tournament 8-1 in doubles play, including three first-place finishes at the Wake Forest Invite at the Wake Forest Tennis Center on Sunday.
"I think we had a lot of ups and downs throughout the weekend," said head coach Danielle Steinberg. "We got a lot of wins on the doubles court, which I am pleased with considering we did not have much time to work on doubles yet. We know we have the potential to be a very strong doubles team in few months if we perfect the fundamentals during the fall."
Maria Linares finished in first place this weekend by default in a walkover, but still defeated Richmond's Emily Dunbar, 6-4, 6-0, in an additional match. After earning her first victory earlier this week, Linares moves to 3-1 in singles play this season.
Ines Mesquita also took home a singles first-place finish in the B1 singles bracket through overtaking Wake Forest's Anna Ulyashchenko, 6-3, 6-1. Mesquita moves to 6-0 this season in singles action.
Anna Turco and Rosanna Maffei earned K-State a first-place finish in the B doubles bracket with an 8-3 victory over Louisville's Raven Neely and Ariana Rodriguez. The tandem finished its first tournament together undefeated, 3-0.
Linares and Mesquita had the lone loss for K-State in doubles play this weekend against Davidson's Ally Sexton and Lindsey Song, 2-8. The duo finished in second place and 2-1 for the weekend.
The Cats as a unit finished the weekend 13-6 in singles play, including going 6-0 Sunday.
"In singles, you could see the growth we made from the first to the third match on certain courts," Steinberg added. "Fall tournaments are challenging because we don't back away in practice during the week, and then go out and compete all weekend. There are a few things we need to work on as a team, and we will focus on that throughout the fall, but overall we are very encouraged and excited to see what this team can do."
Carolina Costamagna finished her weekend with a win in straight sets over Appalachian State's Teodora Sevo, 6-1, 6-4. The lone senior finished the weekend in third place, moving to 4-2 this season in singles play.
Maffei finished her weekend in third place in the A2 singles bracket with a win over Virginia Tech's Nika Kozar, 6-1, 6-4. The product of Italy is now 3-2 in her young collegiate career.
Turco finished in fifth place in the A1 singles bracket and 2-1 this weekend with a win over Madison Silver of Marshall, 6-4, 6-4. The Italian freshman is now 5-1 in her collegiate career in singles.
After already achieving seventh place due to a walkover, Meghan King got her first win of the weekend against Virginia Tech's Shene Disbergen, 3-6, 6-4, 10-8. King finished the weekend 1-2.
The Cats will hit the road next to Lawrence, Kansas, as they participate in the ITA Regionals on October 19-21.
