Keiteyana Parks to Attend NCAA Student-Athlete Leadership Forum

Nov 14, 2017 | Track & Field

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State track and field student-athlete Keiteyana Parks has been nominated by the Big 12 Conference to participate in the NCAA Student-Athlete Leadership Forum, which will be held in Washington, D.C. from November 16-19, 2017.

The forum engages a diverse and dynamic representation of student-athletes, coaches, faculty ad administrators who have had a positive influence on campus and within the community.

Parks, a native of Lincoln, Nebraska, is a senior on the K-State Track and Field team, and was a part of the Courts for Kids Service Trip to Nicaragua in 2017; Parks is widely involved as a leader in the community and on the track and field team.

"Personally, I believe that being a leader means taking responsibility, and striving to be a role model. at times, taking a step back and analyzing a situation to find the best solution and sometimes making tough decisions," Parks said about being a leader.

"As a teammate, I think it means being committed every day to giving my all at weights and at practice and to all the factors that influence our performance but also, being encouraging my teammates in practice and in their classes so that we're all better student-athletes."

On the track, Parks competes primarily in sprint events, as she raced the 400-meter leg of the Distance Medley Relay at the Big 12 Indoor Championship in 2017, where the team placed seventh. Parks has also made an appearance at the 2016 Outdoor NCAA Championship in the 4x400 meter relay, where the team placed 23rd overall.

Parks is just one of two student-athletes selected from the Big 12 Conference, as she will be joined by Iowa State track and field student-athlete Christopher Celona. The student-athlete leadership forum is a three-day event that was established in 1997, and is an opportunity for student-athletes from around the country to gather together to gain leadership skills, explore personal beliefs and values and gain more knowledge about the NCAA as a whole.

"I know that it is a very hands-on event and I am really excited to actively learn all that I can this weekend," Parks said. "I think it is going to be a very fun/energetic learning experience and I am excited to get to know so many other student athletes and work alongside them for the weekend."

Last year, the K-State track and field team was also represented at the event, as senior Terrell Smith was elected to attend in Baltimore, Maryland. For more information on the NCAA Student-Athlete Leadership Forum, visit the event's website by clicking here.
