MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State baseball began its annual Fall World Series Saturday afternoon, as Team Purple scored eight runs in the first two innings to defeat Team Black 9-4 in the first of a three-game intrasquad series at Tointon Family Stadium.
Senior Jake Biller opened the scoring for Team Purple with his RBI double following freshman Dylan Watts' leadoff walk. After Will Brennan's single, TK McWhertor ripped his first of two RBI doubles in the first two innings, scoring Biller and Brennan. Junior Grant Reuben added an RBI single in the first.
In the second inning, Zach Mesa and Watts led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Brennan brought home Watts with an RBI groundout before McWhertor laced his second RBI double. Senior Trent McMaster scored McWhertor with a single up the middle.
The eight runs were more than enough for Team Purple starting pitcher Kasey Ford. Ford, a sophomore right-hander, earned the win after tossing four innings and picking up five strikeouts without yielding a walk. He limited Team Black to two earned runs on five base hits.
Freshman infielder Brett Owen got the scoring started in the top of the first, hitting a solo home run from the No. 2 spot in the lineup off Ford. Team Black added one more run in the second inning as newcomers Jordan Maxson and Rainer Ausmus hit back-to-back doubles before Maxson scored on Noah Hemphill's RBI groundout.
Ford, along with reliever Caleb Littlejim, would keep Team Black scoreless until the top of the sixth inning, when Team Black got RBI doubles from John Sorensen and Ausmus to push its run total to four. Sophomore lefty Will Brennan tossed a scoreless seventh inning to complete Purple's 9-4 victory.
McWhertor ended the afternoon 3-for-3 with two doubles and a game-high three runs driven in while scoring twice. McMaster drove in a pair of runs while going 2-for-3 and a run scored. Biller scored twice and went 2-for-4 for Team Purple.
Ausmus led team black with a 3-for-3 effort, notching two doubles and an RBI. Maxson went 2-for-3 with a run scored and Sorensen scored and drove in a run. All four of Team Black's RBI came from newcomers.
Sophomore Luke Hauswirth tossed three innings of relief for Team Black, allowing just one hit and no earned runs.
Team Purple scored nine runs off 12 hits without an error while Team Black plated four runs off nine base hits and was charged with one error.
