Wildcats Solid at K-State Winter Invitational

Dec 09, 2017 | Track & Field

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The K-State Track and Field team won nine events behind the strength of several personal bests at the K-State Winter Invitational on Saturday, as the team competed in their first full meet of the indoor season.

The men's team won five events and the women's team won four, as junior Brett Neelly, senior Mitchell Dixon and junior Tom Pyle all set new personal bests in their respective event, while several newcomers had an impact as well.

"In terms of the kids that competed today I think things are going pretty well at this point for the first meets of the indoor season," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto said. "I think we can do more in January so hopefully we can stay healthy and keep training well."

The day started with the women's weight throw, where sophomore Helene Ingvaldsen tossed a 19.61m/64-04 on her second attempt to win the event. Following Ingvaldsen, freshman Shaelyn Ward had a great collegiate-opener, throwing a 17.48m/57-04.25 to place second.

The men's weight throw kept the momentum going, as Dixon also claimed the weight throw title, winning the event on a personal best 20.52m/67-04 on his fifth throw. Dixon's new personal best dethrones his throw of 20.31m/66-07.75 that was set at the Big 12 Indoor Championship in 2017, where he placed third in the event.

"I was looking to come out and throw over 20 [meters], which was the goal and I came out with a P.R.," Dixon said. "This meet kind of gives me confidence that I can do well and place high at Big 12's."

Meanwhile in the women's high jump, freshman Clare Gibson got off to a hot start in her first indoor collegiate meet, winning the event with a jump of 1.78m/5-10. Gibson was joined by fellow Wildcats Rhizlane Siba who placed second clearing 1.75m/5-08.75, and Shanae McKenzie placed fourth with by clearing 1.70m/5-07.

In the long jump pit, Pyle notched a new career-best after leaping 6.91m/22-08 on his first jump of the day to place second in the event. Pyle's new indoor career-long jump tops his previous best of 6.85m/22-05.75 that was set at the K-State Winter Invitational in 2016.

To finish off the throwing events, the Wildcats claimed first through third in the women's shot put, where junior Jess St. John tossed a 15.70m/51-05.25, and was joined by the freshman duo of Taylor Latimer and Gabby Lavington who placed second and third, respectively.

In the men's shot put, Neelly closed out the throwing events in a convincing fashion, throwing a new indoor personal-best of 18.94m/62-01.75 to win the event by over three meters. Neelly improves his indoor shot put mark of 18.58m/60-11.50 set last year at the Steve Miller Open.

On the track, the Wildcats claimed three individual titles and the women's title in the 4x400 meter relay. Junior Kurt Loevenstein was the first Wildcat to win on the track, using an impressive burst down the home stretch to claim first place in the 1000 meter run with a time of 2:27.02

In the men's mile, sophomore Travis Hodge made an impressive debut to the indoor season, winning the event with a time of 4:17.31. Hodge was joined by freshman Ethan Powell, who made his indoor competition debut with a time of 4:18.55 in second place.

Meanwhile in the sprint events, senior Terrell Smith claimed the 60-meter crown, finishing the stretch in 6.82 seconds, followed by fellow Wildcat Nick Albus who placed second in 6.98.

The final event of the day was the 4x400m relay, which saw several K-State entries compete. In the women's race, the squad of A'Keyla Mitchell, Akia Guerrier, Nina Schultz and Ranae McKenzie won the relay in 3:44.22 as Schultz ran a split time of 25.88.

The Wildcats will return to the track in 2018, as they compete in the Wildcat Invite on Saturday, January 6, 2018. For more information on the Wildcat Invite click here. For a full look at the 2017-18 K-State Track and Field Indoor and Outdoor Schedule, click here.
