(25/rv) K-State Uses Team Effort in Win on Saturday

MANHATTAN, Kansas – (25/rv) Kansas State had nine players score on Saturday, as the Wildcats avenged a loss from earlier this season at Iowa State, 80-68, over the Cyclones. K-State has now won 50 games over Iowa State in the history of the series (50-38).
Kansas State (18-7, 8-5 Big 12) had four players score in double figures led by senior Kindred Wesemann and redshirt freshman Lanie Page with 17 and 16 points, respectively. Entering Saturday's game, Page had scored a total of 19 points (1.2 ppg).
Joining Wesemann and Page with 11 points each were junior guard Karyla Middlebrook and freshman forward Eternati Willock. This was the 17th time in 25 games that K-State has had three or more players in double figures in the same game.
Iowa State (13-11, 4-9) was led by junior guard Emily Durr with 20 points, including a 6-of-17 effort from 3-point range. Also in double figures for the Cyclones were senior guard Seanna Johnson with 17 points and senior forward Heather Bowe with 10.
K-State registered a season-high 39 points from the bench on Saturday, the most since carding 43 against Florida Atlantic on Dec. 13, 2015. The Wildcats shot 48.3 percent (28-of-58) from the field and held Iowa State to a 37.9 percent (25-of-66) performance.
The Wildcats outrebounded the Cyclones, 38-35, and recorded a 16-10 edge in second chance points. K-State is 17-1 this season when holding the edge on the glass.
Iowa State dashed out to an 11-4 lead with 5:25 remaining in the first quarter. The opening run by the Cyclones was highlighted by three straight 3-pointers from Durr. During the opening five minutes, K-State shot 2-of-7 from the field.
K-State bounced back to end the opening quarter on a 13-5 run to secure a 17-16 lead. Page sparked the comeback with a pair of baskets, followed by Willock adding six points and five rebounds.
Sophomore guard Kayla Goth beat the end of quarter buzzer with a three-pointer from the corner to give K-State the lead. The Wildcats held the Cyclones without a field goal for the final 3:31 of the quarter. Goth finished with nine points and four assists off the bench.
Iowa State built a five-point lead, 31-26, with 5:04 left in the second quarter. K-State used an 8-2 run to take a 34-33 lead with 2:33 left. Middlebrook drained a 3-pointer to start the run and was followed by a rebound and putback from Peyton Williams to tie the game at 31. Wesemann capped the run with her second 3-pointer of the quarter.
The Cyclones retook the lead, 37-34, with a pair of layups with under two minutes to play. Page capped a strong second quarter with consecutive 3-pointers to send K-State into the locker room with a 40-37 lead. Page scored 10 points in the second quarter and tied the school record for 3-pointers in a second quarter with three.
The first half saw seven lead changes and four ties, as K-State shot 48.4 percent (15-of-31) from the floor and Iowa State carded a 40 percent (14-of-35) effort. Both teams had 10 assists and three turnovers in the opening half.
Kansas State built a five-point lead, 47-42, with 7:14 left in the third quarter as Breanna Lewis converted a layup. The Wildcats would go scoreless for the next three minutes and Iowa State would tie the game at 47 on a TeeTee Starks layup and free throw with 6:08 left in the third stanza.
K-State built a seven-point lead, 56-49, with 2:29 remaining in the third quarter on the back of a 9-2 run. Willock finished a contested layup and Goth added four points on a jumper and two free throws. Wesemann then drained her third 3-pointer of the afternoon to force a Cyclones timeout.
The Wildcats took a 64-56 lead into the fourth quarter and increased the margin to eight, 70-62 with 3:57 remaining. Iowa State cut the deficit to four, 72-68, with 3:01 remaining but K-State ended the game on an 8-0 run. During the final push to the buzzer, Shaelyn Martin finished a pair of offensive rebounds with tip-ins, including one with a minute remaining to give K-State a 78-68 lead.
Kansas State returns to the road next week, as the Wildcats travel to Morgantown, West Virginia to face the Mountaineers on Wednesday, Feb. 15. Game time is set for 6 p.m. (CT), and will be broadcast on ROOT Sports Pittsburgh and on the K-State Sports Network.
