MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State men’s golf team will begin spring competition by traveling to Mobile, Alabama, to play in the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate, Monday and Tuesday, held at the par 72, 7,212 yard Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Course.
The field will open play with an 8 a.m., shotgun start for the first two rounds on Monday, leaving the final round to begin on Tuesday with another 8 a.m., shotgun start.
The Wildcats will send a younger scoring lineup that gained experience in the fall semester in sophomore Jeremy Gandon, freshman Jacob Eklund, sophomore Roland Massimino, freshman Ben Fernandez and freshman Levi Valadez.
In addition to the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate, South Alabama will host an individual tournament. Senior Connor Knabe, junior Trent Evans and sophomore Andrew Beckler will represent the Wildcats in the individual competition.
“We are excited to get the spring season started. I think that our preparation over the last couple of weeks has been very good, and I like where everyone is at right now,” said head coach Grant Robbins, whose Wildcats finished in a season-best second place in the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate in October. “The course sets up well for our team. The key will be to stay patient and disciplined in our course management and strategy.”
Gandon, who completed fall play hoisting a team-best 70.91 stroke average, will lead the Wildcats into competition this spring. The Charpey, France, native was able to capture two top-10 finishes in the fall, including a tie for third place in the Badger Invitational.
Eklund and Fernandez each showcased their skill in the fall. Of the two, Eklund was able to capture the only top-10 finish in the Bill Ross Intercollegiate, shooting 1-over par 217. Fernandez found his best finish twice when he tied for 33rd.
Massimino, who enjoyed success early in the fall, will look tocontinue his contribution to the Wildcats. The Lumberville, Pennsylvania, native finished in a tie for fifth place in the Bill Ross Intercollegiate where he carded a 1-under par 215. Valadez showcased a 74.50 stroke average in only two tournaments, his best finish coming in 39th at the Bill Ross Intercollegiate.
The two-day tournament, hosted by South Alabama, will also feature Abilene Christian, Alcorn State, Chattanooga, Cincinnati, Georgia State, Illinois State, Louisiana, Louisville, Mississippi State, Southern Mississippi, Texas State, West Virginia and Western Kentucky.
