MANHATTAN, Kan. - The Kansas State women’s tennis team will continue its road trip in Chicago to takes on UIC on Saturday, February 25, at 1 p.m. and DePaul on Sunday, at 1 p.m. The Wildcats will play at the Flames Tennis Center Saturday, and will play at Lakeshore Sport & Fitness on Sunday.
After a strong weekend in Texas, K-State (6-3) will be looking to add to its recent road success. “We are coming off a great weekend where I feel like things really came together for the first time this spring,” said head coach Danielle Steinberg. “The hope is that we can build off the weekend and the momentum going into Chicago.”
The Wildcats fought in numerous close battles last weekend, including 7-of-10 singles matches going to the third set. “What I was most happy about from this past weekend is the amount of second sets we won after dropping the first set; to me that shows we are learning and maturing as individual players and as a team, and I would love to see that progression continuing to take place this weekend,” said Steinberg.
UIC comes into the weekend with a 4-2 record. The Flames are coming off a win against Illinois State, 4-3, last Saturday. Bianca Zuzu leads UIC with a 4-0 record and was just named the Horizon League Player of the Week.
DePaul sits at a record of 4-5, coming off a loss to St. John’s, 5-2. The Blue Demons are led by Aspasia Avgeri, who has a record of 6-2 in dual match play.
This will be K-State’s first-ever meetings with UIC and DePaul.
Freshman Ines Mesquita has been key to Wildcat victories this spring. She has a record of 5-1 in singles play and was named Big 12 Player of the Week on Tuesday.
K-State has gotten strong play from Carolina Costamagna and Millie Stretton at the Nos. 1 and 2 positions, respectively. They have a combined record of 11-6.
“Just like every match we are going to play for the rest of the year, the doubles point is going to be crucial in both matches this weekend, and we are definitely putting more emphasis on that in practice this week,” added Steinberg.
After play in Chicago, the K-State women’s tennis team returns home to play Houston on Friday, Mar 3, at 1 p.m.
