Wildcats Competitive in Oklahoma Despite Blustery Conditions

Mar 04, 2017 | Rowing

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Strong winds forced the afternoon portion of the Kansas State rowing team’s season-opening scrimmage against Oklahoma to be cancelled, but not before the team got in competitive reps during the morning session on Saturday in Oklahoma City.

“We really got a lot of solid work done this morning,” head coach Patrick Sweeney said about his team’s efforts on Saturday. “I think we were extremely competitive with Oklahoma in all of the pieces that we did, which is a good sign as we head into the rest of the season.”

K-State showed a lot of positive signs in the work that it got in on the water, which included pieces of various lengths and times. Throughout Saturday’s action, which include four two-minute rates of 28-30 strokes, two sets of 1,250 meters at a rate of 34 strokes, three one-minute open rates and one five-minute piece at a rate of 30 strokes, the Wildcats held strong with the Sooners, who finished in second place at last season’s Big 12 Championship race.

“Today was a great opportunity for us to see where we are against a really good conference member in Oklahoma,” Sweeney added. “I am really proud of the work that we got in today. We are going to continue to work hard and push the girls physically before or next race against Tulsa.”

K-State’s racers also found Saturday’s practice time against Oklahoma to be beneficial, believing that it will prepare them for the tough 2017 racing slate that lies ahead.

“I think we learned a lot today,” senior captain Noelle Dykmann said about Saturday’s scrimmage. “We know what we need to work on. Now we can focus on that. We are really strong this year and capable of doing big things. If we can get some good practices on the water, I think we will have a great season.”

The Wildcats resume action on March 18 as the team returns to Oklahoma to square off against Tulsa on the Verdigris River. The race will kick off the team’s spring camp, which will be held in Tulsa from March 18-25.
