Massimino Leads Wildcats at Tiger Invitational
Mar 05, 2017 | Men's Golf
OPELIKA, Alabama – Sophomore Roland Massimino sits in a tie for third place to lead the Kansas State men's golf team as it finished the day in ninth place with a 2-over par, 290, following the first round of the Tiger Invitational at Grand National.
Massimino continued his hot start to spring competition, finishing the first round with a 5-under par, 67 showing. The first-round score from the Lumberville, Pennsylvania, native tied for tops on the team this season with Ben Fernandez who also shot 67 in the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate in October.
"I was really proud of Roland today. He is steadily improving and played solid all day," said head coach Grant Robbins. "The conditions were perfect for scoring, but outside of Roland we weren't able to take advantage of it. We are still within striking distance with 27 holes to go. The wind is supposed to blow a little more tomorrow which gives us a great opportunity to move up."
Freshman Ben Fernandez and senior Matt Green were the closest Wildcats to Massimino on the leaderboard. The pair, each tied for 46th, recorded a 2-over par 74 to end the first round of competition.
Sophomore Jeremy Gandon and freshman Jacob Eklund ended in a tie for 62nd in the standings thanks to a 3-over par, 75, following play on Sunday. Competing as an individual, senior Jack Rickabaugh also shot a 75 to tie Gandon and Eklund. The trio of Wildcats will all look to move the leaderboard in final rounds.
Due to inclement weather in the forecast, the final two rounds of the Tiger Invitational will be played on Monday in order to complete the tournament.
