MANHATTAN, Kan. – The third-ranked TCU Horned Frogs completed the series sweep of K-State Sunday afternoon with a 12-4 victory at Tointon Family Stadium.
After a six-run third and five-run fifth inning that included a grand slam from second baseman Cam Warner, TCU (21-5, 8-1 Big 12) owned an 11-2 lead at the halfway point and coasted to its eighth straight victory. TCU has swept K-State in back-to-back seasons.
K-State (15-13, 0-6 Big 12) suffered its seventh consecutive loss and was swept in its second straight Big 12 series.
"The quality of arms we are seeing in our league, they're really, really good," head coach Brad Hill said after the game. "We lost some confidence, they really stuffed us the last two games and it's been a battle trying to come back and fight ourselves through it a little bit.
"We are going to have to figure out a way," added Hill. "It's all about your mental state right now. From a hitter's standpoint, we're not where we need to be. We are going to change things up a little bit, shorten down some swings and try to do some different things that will make us more competitive."
The Wildcats got a two-run home run off the bat of Hanz Harker in the fourth that cut the Frogs' lead to 6-2, but TCU's five spot in the next half inning opened an insurmountable gap for the Cats. The homer was Harker's second of the season and first since February 25 vs. Liberty. It was the team's first home run in its last eight games overall.
TCU tacked one a single run in the top of the seventh for a 10-run lead at the stretch, but Jake Scudder's two out, two-RBI single prevented the game from being a run-rule shortened affair. The hit was Scudder's 100th of his Wildcat career and the senior first baseman now leads the team with 26 runs batted in.
Freshman outfielder Will Brennan had a team-high three hits in the game, his sixth multiple-hit game of the year. Harker and Scudder had two hits apiece and Kyle Barfield and Josh Ethier each added one.
K-State starting pitcher Brogan Heinen suffered his second loss of the season (1-2) and lasted just 2 2/3 innings, giving up six earned. Reliever Nick Jones surrendered five earned in the fifth, including Warner's first-career grand slam.
Heinen retired the first five hitters he faced, however, in the third inning six straight TCU batters reached base to fuel the Frogs' big inning.
Frog starter Brian Howard went six innings and allowed four hits and two earned runs in his fourth winning effort of the season.
Each TCU starting position player had at least one base hit in the game as the Frogs tallied 15 total hits. Three players recorded multiple RBI in the game – Warner (4), Luke Baker (2) and Ryan Merrill (2). The 12 runs allowed and 15 hits allowed matched season highs for the Wildcats.
K-State travels to Stillwater, Oklahoma, for a three-game series with Oklahoma State (16-11, 1-5) beginning Friday. The entire series game can be heard on KMAN 1350 AM, 93.3 FM and streaming free at k-statesports.com.
