STILLWATER, Okla. – Kansas State got 11 base hits but was only able to manage three runs while Oklahoma State scored at least one run in six innings, including six in the seventh, as the Cowboys took the second game of the series, 13-3, Saturday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
K-State (16-14, 1-7 Big 12) scored single runs in the first, third and seventh innings behind 11 singles but starter Parker Rigler labored through 3 2/3 innings, yielding six runs (four earned) and eight hits, striking out three. Rigler threw 91 pitches and suffered the loss, dropping him to 2-3 on the season.
For the second straight day, freshman Will Brennan led off the game with a base hit – a single to center – but was later wiped out after a fielder's choice. Steve Serratore singled with two outs in the inning to score Cameron Thompson, giving Rigler a 1-0 lead before throwing his first pitch.
Oklahoma State (18-12, 2-6) scored two unearned runs in the home half of the first as part of six runs over the next four innings and never trailed again in the ballgame. The Cowboys got solo homers from second baseman Andrew Rosa in the second and designated hitter Colin Simpson in the third.
Simpson homered in Friday night's game and now has five blasts in his last six games to move into a tie with teammate Garrett Binge and Wildcat first baseman Jake Scudder at the top of the Big 12 leaderboard with six long balls on the year. Six of OSU's 14 hits went for extra bases.
The Cats cut OSU's lead to just a run at 3-1 after Serratore's second two-out RBI single in the top of the third. However, the Cowboys again responded with two runs in the next half inning.
K-State had perhaps its biggest threat in the seventh inning, with one out and the bases loaded but just plated one run courtesy of a wild pitch. In the bottom half of the inning, the Wildcats used three pitchers in the innings and saw Oklahoma State put a six-spot on the board that pushed the gap to 10.
K-State left 11 runners on base after stranding 14 in yesterday's game.
Oklahoma ace Tyler Buffett threw a career-high 118 pitches in 6 1/3 innings in the winning effort. The preseason all-American struck out four and allowed three earned to push his record to 5-2 on the season.
Four pitchers out of the Wildcat bullpen collectively threw 4 1/3 innings and yielded seven runs on six hits while walking four.
Brennan paced the Cats with three hits in the leadoff spot while Quintin Crandall, Scudder and Serratore each went 2-for-4. Serratore had both of K-State's RBI.
The rubber match between the Wildcats and Cowboys will be broadcast on FOX Sports Oklahoma, with first pitch slated for noon. Fans can also listen to K-State baseball on KMAN 1350 AM, 93.3 FM and streaming free at k-statesports.com.
