3V8 Closes Out Challenging Day With Big Win Against Oklahoma

BIG 12 DUAL
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The Kansas State women’s rowing team’s 3V8 put on a masterful performance in its final race on Saturday, overcoming 20 mile-per-hour winds and choppy water to bring home the team’s lone first-place finish of the inaugural Big 12 Dual on the Oklahoma River.
After dropping a tight first race to Texas, the boat came back with a strong effort against the Sooners, leading the entire race and crossing the finish line in 7:57.682. The boat’s time was just under eight seconds faster than its conference foe, which finished in 8:05.518.
“It was nice that the girls beat Oklahoma to close out the day,” head coach Patrick Sweeney said about the 3V8’s performance. “Any win is a good win. They raced well and I think this will give them some confidence that they can hopefully build on moving forward.”
Over the course of the four-hour competition, the Wildcats rowed through extremely challenging conditions, including strong winds, something the team has not been able to prepare for due to the cold and winds out of the north in Manhattan over the last two weeks.
Each of the team’s boats faced immense challenges from its opponents as well, competing against not only the top-two finishers at last season’s Big 12 Championship in Texas and Oklahoma, but also going head-to-head with a Longhorn program that ranks fifth nationally. However, the Wildcats posted results that Sweeney believes they can build on moving towards the final races of the season.
“Along with the 3V8, the 1V8 and 2V8 handled the conditions relatively well considering the amount of time on the water we have had,” Sweeney added. “I think their technique is really improving.”
The Wildcats return to action on April 14-15 when the team travels to Oak Ridge, Tennessee to compete in the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) Championship Regatta. More information can be found on the regatta’s home page here.
