SUN ANGEL CLASSIC
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Sun Angel Stadium has been good to senior Kain Ellis, who recorded the Kansas State track and field team’s lone victory on Saturday after winning the 800-meter run at the Sun Angel Classic. Ellis, who won Saturday’s race with a time of 1:49.73, also won the 800-meter run at the event in 2015 with a then personal-best time of 1:50.05.
“We had some quality early-season marks this weekend,” Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto said. “More importantly, we got some good work in under good weather conditions.”
Ellis was not the only Wildcat that saw success on the track, as three Wildcats finished in the top-10 in the premiere section of their respective events. Junior Terrell Smith was the first Wildcat to compete in a premiere section, recording the second-fastest time by a collegian in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.45 to finish in sixth place.
Senior Morgan Wedekind followed suit with a strong effort in the premiere 1,500-meter run, posting a personal-best time of 4:36.31 to claim seventh place in the race. Fellow distance runner Lukas Koch, who placed third in the mile at the indoor Big 12 Championship, finished in 10th place in Saturday’s premiere mile run with a time of 4:15.73.
The premiere sections were not the only events where Wildcats shined on Saturday. Sophomore Ranae McKenzie had a big day in the 400-meter hurdles, taking second place in the event with a time of 57.98. The Manchester, Jamaica, native finished in 23rd place at last season’s Outdoor NCAA Championship.
K-State also saw two Wildcats dominate the 1,500-meter run, highlighted by senior Blake Goodin, who claimed the bronze medal in the race with a time of 3:55.61. In the women’s race, sophomore Emma Wren posted a seventh-place finish with a time of 4:39.92.
In the field, sophomore Shanae McKenzie matched her season-best in the high jump, with a mark of 1.70m/5-06.75 to finish in a tie for eighth place. Senior Zanri Van der Merwe also finished in the top-10, taking eighth in women’s long jump with a jump of 5.75m/18-10.25.
The Wildcats travel to Austin, Texas, for their next meet to compete in the Texas Invitational on April 14-15. More information on the meet can be found on the Texas track and field website, which is located here.
