MANHATTAN, Kan. – The 2017 IAAF World Championships in London featured a total of seven former and current K-State athletes that combined for one medal and several notable performances during the 10-day event.

The first Wildcat action began on day three of the Championships, in which, former K-State hurdlers Balazs Baji and Jeffrey Julmis took on the 110mH heats. Baji went on to qualify for both the semi-finals and the finals on the same day, running a 13.23 to win his heat in the semi-final round. Julmis would place sixth in his heat, and did not qualify for the semi-finals.

The following day, Ifeanyi Otuonye, representing his native Turks and Caicos, competed in the 200 meter dash running a 21.91 to place seventh in his heat. Later in the day, Baji competed in the 110mH finals and captured the first-ever individual track medal for his home country of Hungary in the World Championships, running a 13.28 to earn bronze.

“This means a lot to me, this is way beyond what I was dreaming about. I still can’t believe it, I am so speechless,” Baji said in excitement after his bronze medal finish. “After I finished that race I just sat down and watched around, this is a perfect atmosphere and this is a perfect moment.”

On day seven of competition, former Wildcat high jumpers Kim Williamson and Alyx Treasure joined the action. Williamson, representing her home country of Jamaica, cleared 1.89m/6’2.25” on her first jump. Williamson was then unable to clear the following height of 1.92m/6’3.5,” which placed her in eighth place in her group. Treasure of Canada set her mark of 1.85m/6’0.75” on her first jump, though she was unable to clear the next height of 1.89m/6’2.25.” Both Williamson and Treasure did not qualify for the finals.

Day eight marked the final competition for the Wildcats, as Shadae Lawrence competed in the discus qualifier. After scratching on her first throw, Lawrence bounced back with a throw of 59.25m/194’4” to set her best throw of the morning. Lawrence’s mark was not enough to get her to the finals round on Championship Sunday.

High jumper Erik Kynard attempted one jump at 2.17m/7’1.5” before withdrawing from the event due to injury.
