Wildcats finish weekend with 9-3 record in singles play
COLUMBIA, Mo. - K-State's Ines Mesquita and Anna Turco set their tennis games apart this weekend, as the pair finished as singles co-champions at the Mizzou Invite at the Missouri Tennis Complex Saturday.
Mesquita, a sophomore, and the freshman Turco, both finished the weekend 3-0 after Saturday victories. The two, along with Clare Raley of Missouri, shared the singles crown.
"I was not sure what to expect going into this weekend, with not having much time to practice," said head coach Danielle Steinberg. "We definitely exceeded expectations on all levels."
Turco defeated Mizzou's Serena Nash in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. The native Italian improved to 3-0 in her freshman season with K-State.
Mesquita needed three sets to defeat the Tigers' Marta Oliveira, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, improving to 14-10 in her Wildcat career in singles play.
The Cats finished the weekend 4-0 in three-set matches, something Steinberg said she is pleased about.
"Playing that many third sets in our first tournament – and winning all of them – shows that the team is really buying into what we are trying to push this fall," Steinberg added. "We have to learn to be tougher on ourselves and find that extra 10 percent we did not know we had."
Carolina Costamagna finished the weekend 2-1 in singles, defeating Mizzou's Mackenzy Middlebrooks, 6-2, 1-6, 6-3, Saturday. The senior from Argentina has now improved her career record to 8-7 in three-set matches.
Meghan King finished the first tournament of her Wildcat career with a 0-6, 1-6, loss to Raley. King finished the weekend 1-2 in singles play.
K-State finished 3-1 in singles play on the day to move its weekend singles record to 9-3 to go along with a 4-2 doubles mark at the three-day event.
The doubles team of King and Mesquita pulled out a 7-6 (5) victory over Wichita State's Alexandra Lazarova and Ting-Ya Hsu. The tandem finished the weekend 2-1.
Costamagna and Turco fell to the ITA's 16th-ranked team of Fatima Bizhukova and Gabriela Porubin (WSU), who ended the Mizzou Invite as the doubles champion. Costamagna and Turco finished its first action of the season at 2-1.
Starting Sunday, Rosanna Maffei and Maria Linares will make their K-State debuts at the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Regional in Stillwater, Oklahoma, at the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center.
