Sep 26, 2017 | Men's Golf
With the help of Jeremy Gandon and Ben Fernandez, who placed in the top 15 on the individual leaderboard, the Kansas State men's golf team was one of seven squads in the 13-team field to shoot under par during Tuesday's final round of the Trinity Forest Invitational at Trinity Forest Golf Club.
Both Gandon and Fernandez shot a 1-under par 70 on Tuesday to finish with a 54-hole score of 1-under par 212, one stroke away from a tie for 10th. Fernandez carded five birdies and an eagle in the final 18, while Gandon finished with four birdies in the round.
"I was extremely proud of Ben and Jeremy," head coach Grant Robbins said. "Both were very solid all week, but what I am most proud of is how they handled themselves and how they battled through some adversity."
K-State shot a 3-under par 281 on Tuesday, its best round of the season. The Wildcats used that to improve two spots to finish in 10th place at 15-over par 867.
Eklund matched the score of Gandon and Fernandez on Tuesday at 1-under par 70. He finished in a tie for 61st by recording a 12-over par 225. Roland Massimino tied for 69th at 15-over par 228, while JC Campbell concluded play at 20-over par 233 to finish 78th.
"I am really proud of these guys. They did a great job of hanging in there after the rough start and showed a tremendous amount of poise all week," Robbins said. "The golf course played difficult, and the experience we gained competing against this type of field will pay dividends for us down the road."
Florida carded a 9-under par 275 in the final round to win the event by 10 strokes at 17-under 835. USC's Justin Suh maintained his top spot on the individual leaderboard to take first place with a 10-under par 203 score.
Kansas State will return to play October 13-15, with the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate in Jonesborough, Tennessee.
