Wildcat Women Ranked 18th in USTFCCCA Preseason Poll
Jan 10, 2018 | Track & Field
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Behind a pair of returning All-Americans and early season results, the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) has ranked the K-State women's track team No. 18 with 43.43 points in the USTFCCCA Preseason Poll the organization announced on Wednesday.
The No. 18th-place ranking marks the fourth-straight season that the Wildcat women have been ranked in the Top 25 of the USTFCCCA Preseason Poll, after a No. 18 ranking in 2017, No. 4 ranking in 2016, and a No. 19th ranking in 2015. The K-State men's team also made in appearance in Wednesday's rankings, coming in at No. 71 with 7.64 points. For a full listing of the rankings, click here.
Big 12 opponents, Texas (No. 5), Iowa State (No. 14), and Baylor (No. 19) joined K-State in the top-25 of the women's ranking. The league had the fourth-most teams represented in the Top-25 of all the conferences in the women's rankings, while three Big 12 teams made appearances in the men's rankings, including Texas Tech (No. 10), Kansas (No. 11) and Texas (No. 15).
Last year, the Wildcat women went on to finish sixth place at the Big 12 Indoor Championships in Ames, Iowa, before registering eight points at the NCAA Championship meet, finishing tied for 27th. The Wildcats return two All-Americans to their indoor squad, sophomores Nina Schultz and Shardia Lawrence.
After a fast start to the 2017-18 season – including seniors Rhizlane Siba (high jump) and Jess St. John (shot put) posting marks among the all-time best at K-State a week ago – the Wildcats host the KU-KSU-WSU Triangular on Saturday, January 13 at Ahearn Fieldhouse. Field events are set to begin at 10:00 a.m. while the track events pick up at 1:00 p.m. The event is free and open to the public; however, the K-State Track and Field team is collecting non-perishable food items for the Flint Hills Breadbasket – Community Food Network, and donations are welcome.
