
Cats Sweep Roos to Open Spring Season

K-State moves to 5-0 all-time vs. UMKC
MERRIAM, Kan. – K-State women's tennis notched its first team victory of the 2018 spring season by defeating the UMKC Roos 7-0 at the Kansas City Racquet Club in Merriam, Kansas, on Thursday afternoon.
The victory marks the third straight year K-State (1-0) has posted a 7-0 sweep of UMKC (0-1), as the Cats improve their mark to 5-0 all-time against the Roos.
"It is always a good day when everyone can get a win, especially the with first match jitters," said head coach Danielle Steinberg. "We played pretty solid on most singles courts and had the right attitude and mindset. In doubles, we did not have the same energy and that is something we need to improve fast. I was happy to see the adjustments the team made going into singles play."
The Wildcats won their first two doubles matches to earn the team's first point from UMKC. Margot Decker and Carolina Costamagna played at No. 1 doubles for K-State and defeated Aliona Ladutska and Grace Ball, 6-2. Maria Linares and Ines Mesquita held the No. 2 position and topped Melinda Johnson and Yana Grechkina, 6-4.
Rosanna Maffei, playing at the No. 3 position in singles, breezed by Johnson, 6-0, 6-0. The freshman product of Italy is now 5-3 in singles play.
Playing at the No. 1 spot, Decker eased past the senior Ladutska, 6-0, 6-1. The freshman from France moves to 6-1 in her career.
At the No. 4 position, Linares overtook Grechkina, 6-3, 6-2. The Venezuelan freshman overcame a 3-3 tie in the first set by winning the next six games. She now improves to 7-3 in singles in her Wildcat career.
No. 2 Costamagna broke a 4-4 tie in the second set of her match and defeated the Roos' Katie Fries, 6-2, 6-4. Costamagna is now 8-6 in singles competition this season and 46-47 in her career.
Mesquita defeated fellow sophomore Thanushree Vale, 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 5 position. Mesquita moved to 11-3 in her sophomore year in singles action.
Senior-transfer Carolina Lewis, competing in her first action as a Wildcat, topped off the dual match with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over UMKC freshman Grace Ball. This match gives the native of Hilton Head, South Carolina, her first victory as a Wildcat.
Sophomore Meghan King, a native of Overland Park, Kansas, notched an exhibition victory over Staats Brylin, 6-4.
