Oct 24, 2018 | Cross Country
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State men's and women's cross country teams will compete in the Big 12 Championship, hosted at the Iowa State Cross Country Course in Ames, Iowa on Friday, as the Wildcats compete to see who is the best of the Big 12 Conference.
"I think as a team everyone is just looking to step up and have their best race of the season," Head Coach Ryun Godfrey said going into the Big 12 Championship. "It is championship racing so hopefully that's what we are able to do. A lot of it just comes down to everyone trying to have their best race."
The racing gets started at 10:00 a.m. CT with the start of the women's 6k race, followed by the men's 8k race at 11:00 a.m. The K-State women will take out of box No. 9, while the men have been assigned box No. 7, the Big 12 Conference announced on Sunday.
The Big 12 Championship marks the fifth meet of the season for the Wildcats and their first postseason competition, after previously competing at the Bradley Pink Classic on October 12. This year's Big 12 Championship will be the first time since 2008 that Iowa State Cross Country Course will play host to the Big 12 Championship.
As a team, the K-State men enter the Big 12 Championship after a program-best finish at the meet a season ago, where K-State placed fourth overall with 142 points.
In 1998, the K-State women earned their first Big 12 cross country championship, earning their program-best finish with 78 points. A year ago, the Wildcats placed ninth overall, led by senior Kayla Doll who came in 21st, as each Wildcat set a personal best at the meet at the time.
The Iowa State Cross Country Course is hosting their first Big 12 Championship since 2008. Despite being the first conference championship held at the course in 10 years, the Wildcats have experience running the course after competing at the NCAA Midwest Regionals held there last year.
Among the competition, Iowa State looks to defend both their men's and women's titles in 2017, as a number of Big 12 schools are ranked atop the USTFCCCA national poll, including the No. 17 Iowa State women, No. 6 Iowa State men and No. 23 Oklahoma State men.
For the third consecutive year, the Big 12 Championship will be broadcasted on FloTrack. Live and on-demand coverage of the Big 12 Championship will be available here.
