Oct 08, 2018 | Women's Golf
MEDINAH, Ill.– Kansas State sophomore Ella Adams had a strong performance on Monday as she carded a 3-under par 141 during the first two rounds of the Illini Women's Invitational at the par-72, 6,159-yard Medinah Country Club.
Adams, who is tied for 11th place, carded a 1-over par 73 during the first round of play before improving her score by five strokes, tallying a scorching 4-under par 68 in round two. The Adelaide, Australia, product helped the Wildcats improve their second-round score by 10 shots as they were at 8-over par 296 in round one and 2-under par 286 in the second round.
"We bounced back in round two after not being able to get much positive momentum in the first round," head coach Kristi Knight, whose team is in 11th place at 6-over par 582, said. "We need to keep that positive momentum going in the final round."
Adams was even par over the front nine in round two before picking up four birdies on the back nine to help the Wildcats improve three spots on the leaderboard, while she climbed 23 spots herself on the individual leaderboard. Kansas State enters the final round within one stroke of 10th-place Indiana.
Freshman Briony Bayles trails Adams by six strokes at 3-over par 147 and is currently tied in 47th place. One stroke off of Bayles is the duo of sophomore Reid Isaac and senior Chloe Weir, each of whom carded a 4-over par 148 to tie for 54th place. Rounding out the Wildcats is sophomore Niamh McSherry, who is at 9-over par 153 to tie for 76th.
Purdue tops the leaderboard at an impressive 19-under par 557. The Boilermakers have a six-stroke lead over second-place Kent State. Michaela Finn of Kent State sits atop the individual leaderboard at 8-under par 136, holding a one stroke lead over Melati Putri of Purdue and Maggie Ashmore of Augusta.
