Neelly Breaks 37-Year Old School Record at K-State Winter Invitational
Dec 08, 2018 | Track & Field
MANHATTAN, Kansas – Senior Brett Neelly broke the 37-year old shot put school record, previously set by All-American Ray Bradley in 1981, at the K-State Winter Invitational at Ahearn Field House in Manhattan, Kansas on Saturday, as Neelly unleashed a throw of 20.15m/66-01.5 to become the first Wildcat to break the 20 meter barrier in the shot put.
"It's obviously very historic. Brett [Neelly] doing this well is testament to how hard he has worked this offseason," Assistant Coach Nathan Ott said of Neelly. "Being in the national mix was the goal for the season, so he did that emphatically today. Now the expectation is to just keep competing well and getting better."
"It just shows all of the hard work that Brett [Neelly] has put into his training," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto added.
The record-shattering throw came on Neelly's third attempt of the day, as he wound up and unleashed a new school and meet record. Entering Saturday, Neelly stood at fourth in the all-time K-State shot put list with a throw of 19.19m/62-11.50 set at the Texas Tech Shootout in 2018, though his third attempt on Saturday moved him to the top shot putter in K-State history.
"I have been working hard over the offseason and my goal was to break the shot put school records because I got pretty close to the outdoor school record last year." Neelly said. "But today that third throw was just a culmination of a lot of hard work and I am just grateful it turned out."
In addition to Neelly's big mark, junior Helene Ingvaldsen was the top collegian in the women's weight throw on Saturday with a throw of 21.05m/69-00, which neared her personal best of 21.20m/ 69-06.75 set at the Razorback Invitational last season. Sophomore Shaelyn Ward recorded a throw of 18.42m/60-05 to place third, while junior Ashley Petr placed fourth with a throw of 17.19m/56-04.
In the women's pole vault competition, sophomore Hannah Buller tied a career-best in the event, vaulting 3.50m/11-05.75 in her season-opener. Her vault ties a career-best, previously set at last year's K-State Winter Invitational.
On the track, the Wildcats got started in the 60 meters, where the Wildcats came away with a pair of victories. In the women's race, sophomore Taishia Pryce came away with the victory in her first race in a K-State uniform running a 7.52, edging Asha Cave, who competed unattached and ran a 7.53. In the men's race, junior Jullane Walker ran away with the victory in 6.83.
Pryce and Walker also went on to claim victories in the 300 meters, as Pryce won the women's race in 39.47 and Walker won the men's race in 35.66.
In the final event of the day, the 4x400 meter relay, the K-State team of Lauren Taubert, Ranae McKenzie, LaVaun Stephenson and Ariel Okorie put together the fastest time of the race, finishing in 3:49.96. In the men's 4x400 meter relay, the K-State team consisting of Justin Davis, Tejaswin Shankar, Angelo Gordon and Kyle Parr won in 3:23.52.
With the conclusion of the K-State Winter Invitational, the Wildcats will set their sights on 2019, as the Wildcats return to Ahearn Field House on January 12, 2019 to host the Wildcat Invitational in Manhattan, Kansas.
