Coastal Carolina Walks Off Wildcats in 10 Innings

Feb 18, 2018 | Baseball

CONWAY, S.C. – K-State shortstop Cameron Thompson's two-run single in the top of the ninth inning forced extra innings Sunday, but Coastal Carolina's Kevin Woodall, Jr.'s walk-off single in the 10th handed the Chanticleers a 4-3 victory at Springs Brooks Stadium.

Woodall, Jr.'s single down the left field line with two outs off K-State reliever Jared Marolf scored Cory Wood from second base, who earlier doubled, gave Coastal Carolina (3-0) its second straight walk-off victory. Marolf (0-1), who was tagged for the loss, struck out a career-high seven batters and surrendered just three hits over 3 2/3 innings.

K-State (0-3) crawled out of an early 3-0 hole and battled to tie the game at three when Thompson singled in the ninth inning, scoring Brett Owen and Will Brennan. The knock was Thompson's third of the game, as he, along with Owen and Brennan, each went 3-for-5 on the day

The Cats out-hit CCU by a 13-11 count but stranded 14 baserunners in the game compared to Coastal's five left on base.

Marolf, a sophomore righty who at one point struck out five consecutive Chanticleer hitters, came on in relief of starter Justin Heskett, who threw six full innings and allowed three earned runs with three strikeouts. Heskett, a senior, kept CCU off the scoreboard in four straight innings after Coastal scored three runs in the game's first two innings.

Consecutive two-out hits – a double by Seth Lancaster followed by an RBI single by Woodall, Jr. – in the first inning handed Coastal Carolina an early 1-0 lead. The Chanticleers added two more runs after beginning the second inning with four consecutive singles. Kieton Rivers began the string and later scored on Cameron Pearcey's opposite-field single.

Wildcat hitters collected eight hits off Chanticleer starter Anthony Veneziano but were only able to score one run of a Kyle Barfield RBI single that scored Thompson, who led off the inning with a double. It was Barfield's first run driven in of the 2018 season.

Veneziano went 5 1/3 innings and struck out three before being lifted for Patrick Orlando. Matt Eardensohn coughed up the CCU lead in the ninth but still took home the win, throwing the final 2 2/3 inning and striking out four.

To begin the Wildcat ninth, Owen and Brennan each singled before Jake Biller laid down a sacrifice bunt to push both runners into scoring position ahead of Thompson's two-run single.

K-State wraps up the 19th Annual Brittain Resorts Baseball at the Beach on Monday as it challenges Virginia Tech at TicketReturn.com Field in Myrtle Beach. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. CT, as freshman righty Quinton Potter takes the mound. Monday's matchup can be heard live on KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM) and streamed free at k-statesports.com.
