Four Wildcats Named to Academic All-Big 12 Teams
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Four Kansas State men's basketball players were selected to Academic All-Big 12 Team on Thursday, including three on the First Team, as the league office announced its 31-member all-academic teams.
Senior Mason Schoen, junior Kade Kinnamon and sophomore Pierson McAtee were named to the league's 21-member first team, which consists of those student-athletes who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA. Sophomore Xavier Sneed was selected to the 10-member second team, which honors student-athletes with a GPA of 3.0 to 3.19.
Schoen repeated his first team accolades from a year ago, while Kinnamon, McAtee and Sneed all received the honor for the first time in their respective careers. Sneed was a member of the Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team last season as freshmen are not eligible for academic all-league honors.
The four Academic All-Big 12 selections and the three first team recipients tie for the second-most in school history, as both were only surpassed in 2017 with five overall honorees, including four first team selections.
In head coach Bruce Weber's tenure at K-State, he has now seen 13 student-athletes earn Academic All-Big 12 honors a total of 16 times. The individual honors continue another solid academic year for the Wildcats, as all four selections were among eight players named to the Fall 2017 Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll.
A starter in all 28 games this season, Sneed is averaging 11.3 points per game on 42.7 percent shooting, including 35.6 percent from 3-point range, to go with 4.7 rebounds, 1.6 steals and 1.5 assists in 30.4 minutes per game. He leads the team in 3-point field goals (52), while he is second in rebounding and steals and third in scoring, double-digit scoring games (17) and field goals made (106).
Kinnamon, McAtee and Schoen have all seen action in eight games this season. The team's lone senior, Schoen has been named to every Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll since he joined the team in the Fall of 2014. He is finishing his second bachelor's degree (in marketing) while taking classes toward his MBA. Kinnamon and McAtee have been named to each of the last three Commissioner's Honor Rolls.
Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the academic all-league men's basketball team consisted of 19 first team members combined with 13 on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
