Bats Come Alive, Ford Gets Win in Series Opener at ODU

Feb 23, 2018 | Baseball

NORFOLK, Va. – K-State exploded for 11 runs on 18 hits and starting pitcher Kasey Ford contributed a quality start in the Wildcats' 11-3 victory in the series opener Friday against Old Dominion at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.

All nine starters in K-State's (3-3) lineup recorded a base hit, including multi-hit games by five Wildcats, led by senior Jake Biller with his career-high four hits. Biller, along with Drew Mount and Kyle Barfield, drove in two runs in aiding the Cats' season-high run and hit totals.

Ford, a 6-foot-6 sophomore righty, earned his first victory of the season and equaled his career-long outing as he threw seven full innings. Ford allowed three earned runs on seven hits in helping K-State pick up its third straight victory.

Leadoff hitter Will Brennan and shortstop Cameron Thompson added three hits each. Brennan, a sophomore, extended his career-long on-base streak to 29 games, dating back to last season, and has hit safely in all six games to begin the 2018 season.

The Wildcat offense got rolling early, scoring seven runs in the first three innings off ODU (2-3) starter Jim Fluke. Fluke allowed  seven runs (5 earned) on 11 hits through the first five innings in the loss.

Mount, a junior center fielder, led off the second inning with a solo homer, his second of the season. K-State brought across two more runs in the inning courtesy of an RBI single from Trent McMaster and an RBI groundout from Barfield that scored McMaster.

Old Dominion got one of those three runs back with a solo shot from third baseman Culver Lamb. ODU recorded two more base hits in the inning but Ford work around the jam, stranding a pair of runners in scoring position.

The Cats batted around in the third as they plated four more runs for a 7-1 lead. K-State got another RBI from Mount, a double, with run-scoring singles from Rainer Ausmus and Barfield in the inning. The game marked the third consecutive outing that Mount drove in multiple runs.

An infield single from Matt Schwarz scored the Monarchs' second run of the game in the bottom of the fourth. ODU also got an RBI groundout from Devon Adams in the inning to cut into the Cats' lead at 7-3 through four.

Biller drove in his first run with his third base hit of the game in the eighth inning before an RBI double in the ninth inning that scored Brennan, who had an RBI single of his own in the ninth.
Junior Brogan Heinen relieved Ford and kept the Monarchs scoreless in the eighth and ninth innings. The 6-4 right-hander struck out one and has yet to allow a run this season.

Four ODU hitters had a pair of hits, including leadoff hitter Kyle Battle. Lamb, DJ Lardge and Schwarz also tallied two hits.

Old Dominion used three pitchers who combined to surrender 11 runs and 18 hits while striking out five and walking five Wildcat hitters.
