No. 35 K-State Falls to No. 42 Nebraska, Tops Akron

Cats move to 6-2 this season
MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State women's tennis split a doubleheader Friday at Body First Indoor Tennis Center, falling 4-2 to No. 42 Nebraska before defeating Akron, 6-1, snapping its four-match winning streak.
The Wildcats (6-2) sought to hand a third straight opponent its first loss of the season against the Cornhuskers, but dropped the doubles point, and then battled in a seesaw affair in the day's opening match.
Freshman, and the country's No. 104-ranked player, Margot Decker began the singles play for the day with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Nebraska's Visanti Shinde. Freshman Maria Linares followed with a win which gave the Cats a brief 2-1 lead when she defeated Paula Del Cueto Castillo 7-5, 6-3. Linares moves to 7-1 this season in singles play.
Nebraska (8-0) then overtook the Wildcats, winning each of the next three singles matches.
Freshman Rosanna Maffei fell in straight sets, and Nebraska tied the match at 2-2, as she was topped by Brianna Lashway, 3-6, 4-6. Nebraska reclaimed a 3-2 lead as senior Carolina Costamagna was outlasted by Claire Reifeis, 6-1, 6-2. The Cornhuskers clinched the team win against the Wildcats as sophomore Ines Mesquita was beaten by Katerina Matysova, 4-6, 5-7.
In part two of the doubleheader against Akron (6-6), the Cats completed a near-sweep over the Zips, 6-1.
K-State took an early 1-0 lead by nabbing its fifth doubles point in eight tries of the spring season with wins at the Courts 2 and 3.
Linares and Maffei defeated the Zips' Luisa Echeverry and Miruna Vasilescu, 6-3, winning their first match as a duo. At No. 3 doubles, freshman Anna Turco and senior-transfer Carolina Lewis moved to 2-0 this season playing together as they defeated Akron's Waverly Wituski and Carli Knezevich, 6-4, to clinch the point. Costamagna and Decker dropped just their second match of the season when paired together (5-2), falling to Rita Pedroso and Anna Uljanov, 3-6.
In singles play, the Cats won five of six matches.
Costamagna pushed K-State's lead to 2-0 after defeating the Zips' Knesevich, 6-0, 6-2. Linares extended the lead to 3-0 after defeating Rita Pedroso, 7-6 (2), 6-0. Maffei completed the victory with a three-set winner over Vesilecu, 1-6, 6-4, 6-0.
Following the clinching of the match, the Cats continued play, playing two out of three with eight-game pro sets.
Anna Turco defeated Luisa Echeverry, 6-3, 6-3. Ines Mesquita fell at No. 5 singles to the Zips' Anna Uljanov, 9-7. Lewis picked up her second win of the spring season by defeating Mady Wolfe, 8-2.
Overall, K-State as a team went 7-4 in singles play and 3-3 in doubles on the day, and moved to 29-14 in singles this season.
