Adams Paces Cats as K-State is in Ninth in Arizona
Feb 25, 2018 | Women's Golf
PEORIA, Ariz. – Kansas State freshman women's golfer Ella Adams had a career day on Sunday morning to propel her to a tie for 12th place during the first two rounds of the Westbrook Spring Invitational at the par-72, 6,252-yard Westbrook Village Golf Club.
Adams was on fire during round one as she carded a career best 7-under par 65, the second-lowest round in school history. Her performance helped the Wildcats fire an 8-under par 280 in round one, tying the program's best team 18-hole score originally set at the Johnie Imes Invitational in September of 2014.
"Ella had a great round this morning," head coach Kristi Knight said. "That led the way for our record-tying team score. Unfortunately, we could not keep the momentum. We have got to stay aggressive and keep a positive mind."
K-State, which was tied for second place after the first round, was unable to hang on as the Wildcats are in ninth place at 3-under par 573 entering the final round.
Adams single-round performance was one stroke off the school record set by former Wildcat Christine Boucher in 2002 as she collected eight birdies and just one bogey in the morning round. With a 4-over par 76 in the second round, she put together a season-best 3-under par 141 over the first 36 holes.
Trailing Adams by a single stroke is senior Connie Jaffrey, who is at 2-under par 142 to tie for 18th. Niamh McSherry in a tie for 36th place at even-par 144 and Reid Isaac is tied for 48th place at 2-over par 146. Rounding out the Cats was freshman Darby Deans, who carded a 13-over par 157 and is tied for 82nd.
Nebraska sits atop the leaderboard after carding a scorching 20-under par 556, two strokes ahead of Oklahoma. The Sooners' Kate Milligan – who carded a 14-under par 130 on the day that included a 10-under par 62 in round one – leads on the individual leaderboard by three strokes over Kate Smith of Nebraska.
The Westbrook Spring Invitational will conclude Monday with an 8:30 a.m. (MT) shotgun start. Live results can be followed on www.birdiefire.com and results will be available at www.k-statesports.com at the conclusion of the tournament.
