LIHUE, Hawai'i – The Kansas State women's golf team slashed 10 shots off its first-round score, as the Wildcats improved three spots into a tie for third place after second-round play of the Rainbow Wahine Invitational on Tuesday held at the par-72, 6,058-yard Ocean Course at Hokuala.
K-State posted a round of even-par 288, which was the second-best round of the tournament among the 14-team field. The Wildcats are tied with San Diego State entering the final round at 10-over par 586, one shot back of second-place Eastern Michigan.
"Today was a solid round and could have been special except for some poor par-3 scoring," head coach Stew Burke said. "The ladies really grinded and bounced back after mistakes. We had five players in it right up until the end, which gave us the best chance of putting together a solid team score. Hopefully that will be the catalyst for a great run tomorrow, and we'll see how much ground we can make up on the leader."
K-State was paced for a second-straight day by sophomore Keen Visavapattamawan, who tallied a round of 2-under par 70 to post her fourth under-par round of the season. The Bangkok, Thailand, native produced three birdies on the day as she rose four spots into a tie for third place at 2-under par 142. She is one of only five golfers in the 80-player field to record even- or under-par scores in each of the first two rounds.
The Wildcats' biggest riser on Tuesday was junior Kelsey Chen, who tallied a second-round total of even-par 72 to move 12 spots into a tie for 31st place at 6-over par 150. The Dalian, China, native had an up-and-down round as she was 3-under par through eight holes before a double-bogey and a bogey made her 2-over par with two holes to play. But, like she did to begin her round, Chen recorded two-straight birdies at the end of her round to put her back at even.
Junior Nanami Nakashima and freshman Amy Wang matched scores for a second-straight day as each went 1-over par 73 on Tuesday. The duo moved up four spots into a tie for 12th place at 3-over par 147.
Freshman Mia Ingham also moved up the leaderboard after a round of 2-over par 74, a five-stroke improvement from the opening round. The Surrey, England, native enters Wednesday's final round tied for 47th place at 9-over par 153.
BYU broke a tie with No. 50 Eastern Michigan and pulled out to an 11-shot lead entering the final round. The Cougars sit at 2-under par 574 following a second-round score of 6-under par 282. The Cougars also have the top individual in Maria Jose Barragan, who enters the final round with a four-shot lead at 7-under par 137.
The final round of the Rainbow Wahine Invitational gets underway with a 9 a.m. (HT) shotgun start on Wednesday. Live results can be followed on SCOREBOARD powered by Clippd.
