Schultz, Smith Qualify for NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships
Feb 28, 2018 | Track & Field
MANHATTAN, Kansas – A young star will make a return trip and an experienced veteran will make his debut as sophomore Nina Schultz and senior Terrell Smith have been selected to represent K-State at the 2018 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium in College Station, Texas on March 9-10. Both have turned in some of the top performances in the nation during the 2017-18 indoor campaign and aim to better those marks on the NCAA stage.
Schultz, a native of New Westminster, Canada, qualified for the Championships in the pentathlon and long jump, including an NCAA-best score in the women's pentathlon of 4,502 registered at the Texas Tech Shootout on February 9. Schultz's career-best score also ranks seventh all-time in NCAA history and sixth in the world this year.
In addition to her NCAA-leading pentathlon score, Schultz also secured a qualifier in the women's long jump after jumping a personal best 6.39m/20-11.75 in her pentathlon performance at the Texas Tech Shootout. Her mark was good enough to rank her 11th in the nation this year.
"I am hoping to just go in and improve on my score from earlier this year. I do not like to go into competition worrying about placing so I think if I execute my events I will be able to place pretty well," Schultz said.
In the men's competition, Smith qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships in the men's 200 meters, where he ran the 12th fastest time in the country of 20.65 on a flat 200-meter track at the DeLoss Dodds Invitational. Smith is coming off a season in which he tied for fourth in the 200 at the Big 12 Championship and set a school record time of 20.86 at the Texas Tech Shootout.
Last year, Schultz finished third in the pentathlon as a freshman, scoring 4,340 points to earn first-team all-American honors, while Smith will make his first appearance at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
The NCAA Indoor Championships begin on March 9 beginning at 12:15 p.m. with the women's pentathlon and continue Saturday, March 10 at 12:00 p.m. For more information on the NCAA Indoor Championships, including ticket information, travel information, a full schedule of events and more, click here.
