MANHATTAN, Kansas – Former Kansas State track and field standouts Erik Kynard, Jr., and Balazs Baji will compete in the 2018 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Birmingham, England this weekend, in hopes of solidifying themselves among the best on the international stage.
Kynard, a former NCAA Champion in the high jump for the Wildcats in 2011 and 2012 and current assistant coach, qualifies for the World Championships after winning the USATF Indoor Championships for the fifth-consecutive year with a jump of 2.30m/7-06.50. Kynard's winning jump establishes him as the only men's high jumper to win the USATF Championship for five consecutive years. As a native of Toledo, Ohio, he will represent the United States in the men's high jump on Thursday at 12:45 p.m.
"His [Kynard's] run both indoors and outdoors is pretty special stuff. He has 9-of-10 [USATF Championships] indoor and outdoor in the past five years. With the talent in our country that is pretty good stuff," Kynard's personal coach Cliff Rovelto said.
Representing Hungary, Baji will compete in the opening heats of the men's 60-meter hurdles on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. He is coming off a bronze medal performance at the IAAF World Outdoor Championships in August of 2017, where he ran the 110-meter hurdles in 13.28, becoming the first Hungarian to individually medal in a World Championship track event. During his time at K-State in 2010, Baji placed seventh at the Big 12 Championship in the 110-meter hurdles. He went on to compete for Hungary in the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games.
The IAAF World Indoor Championships will be televised in the United States on NBCSN and the Olympic Channel. For more information on the IAAF Indoor World Championships, including a full schedule of events, television information and more, click here.
